It has been four year since dear Rachel passed, yet she remains in my heart every day.  I have so many beautiful memories of my friendship with Rachel -- both professional and personal -- and I interact with her art every day in my home.  Rachel is very much present in my heart and I am so grateful to have had her in my life.  I miss her every day.
Thinking of my dear great Aunt Rachel on her birthday, with love to all whose lives she enriched.
Rachel introduced me to art - which eventually became my life and my work.  At age five (in the mid 60s) Rachel took Victor and me to the Museum of Modern Art.  I recall the three of us walking in the cavernous entry area and in front of us was Picasso’s Guernica!  Mind blowing enough but to the right of it was Matisse’s Dance!  That pretty much did it for me right then and there.  Rachel was a true artist who know exactly how to share art’s power.  She is the reason I had that experience - in addition to countless other experiences involving Victor - but I still recall that moment like it was today!

I was introduced to Rachel by Dominick and Donald Taglialatella.  Donald had been my student a number of years earlier at the University of Delaware.  When I accepted an appointment at NYU's Institute of Fine Arts, I was but a few short blocks from Donald's gallery.  Donald told me about an exceptional artists whose work he wanted me to see.  When I visited Avanti gallery I was knocked over by the poetry, simplicity, depth of feeling and virtuoso technique of Rachel.  When Donald subsequently asked me to write a catalogue essay for a show he was planning of Rachel's recent encaustic works, I jumped at the opportunity.

It was in preparation for this essay that I met Rachel, and soon her entire family.  A visit to Rachel's studio was a rare treat.  Before the tools of her trade she glowed, as if through some alchemical transformation.  Of course, Rachel was ALWAYS alive, and in so many ways larger than life: her kindness, her extraordinary capacity for love, her friendship and her generosity still sustain me.

What began as a professional relationship soon became a deep friendship.  I loved Rachel dearly.  Although I was living in Spain from 2014-20, Rachel and I were always in contact.  She celebrated with me when, as a fellow Sepharad, I received my Spanish passport in 2018.  I know she was there with me in spirit when I swore my oath to the Spanish Constitution.

From an extraordinary Greek/Turkish/Sephardic dinner that she prepared at her home with Irv, to many hours discussing art, Rachel transformed my life in so many large and small ways.  Although she is no longer present among us, her spirit shines its bright light on me every day as I look at and live with her art.  Rachel's work, Rachel's beautiful soul, have sustained me at difficult times.  When my parents died, Rachel's work spoke to me in profound and moving ways.  And today, in dark times when hope seems so elusive, Rachel's spirit fills me with love.

Thank you, dear, dear Rachel.  You are forever in my heart.

I am an artist by birth, but I am an encaustic artist because of Rachel Friedberg. I was fortunate enough to have been her first studio assistant in 1988 and that apprenticeship changed the course of my life.
My tasks were mundane: mix the encaustic medium, prepare the boards for her, lay down the first layer of background encaustic. But in order to do them correctly, she had to teach me, and Rachel was a born teacher. She shared with me her formula for encaustic that she had perfected over her 20 years of working by that point. During the week I worked for her, but Rachel did not use her studio on the weekends, and so she generously allowed me access to her studio on the weekends so that I could work on my own pieces. We fell into a routine that on Mondays, before she started her work for the week, she would (again, very generously) spend however much time we needed for her to review my work from the weekend. She was a teacher, yes, but more than that she was a mentor, a supporter and a keen-eyed critic, and her thoughtful critiques of my work helped me throughout my career. But I learned the most from just being in her presence and witnessing how she moved through the world, how she treated fellow artists (generously), gallerists (with healthy skepticism), collectors (graciously) and her sweet husband, Irving (lovingly). I learned more in those 6 months than I learned in my entire college career. After the apprenticeship ended, I graduated art school and moved home to New Mexico to begin my professional art practice. Through the years we would check in via phone calls and my (infrequent) visits to NYC. And of course, texting! Rachel was a great texter and I loved sending her images of my latest paintings and reading her comments backs. Rachel generously played host to me when I would visit, and we would spend hours together visiting the MoMA and/or Whitney to take in whatever current exhibitions we NEEDED to see. I will treasure my time with her. I can’t believe she is not here, but I know that she will always be in my heart and in my eyes, and in my ART for the rest of my days. My deepest condolences to Rachel’s loving family. I know she will be so deeply missed. Thank you. -Angela Berkson

My best friend of 40 years, Rachel Friedberg -artist extraordinaire, mentor, confidant, parenting counselor, curatorial eye, and straight out irreplaceable presence, passed Friday afternoon. One of many of her admiral qualities was a sense of empathy and caring that was so deeply felt that she would suffer more than you when hearing of your personal struggles. She was never critical but rather discerning and supportive. The fulcrum and matriarch of her family will be deeply missed for the profound place she held in the many lives that had the good fortune to be touched by her love and kindness.

Rachel took Victor and I to the Museum of Modern Art when we were in kindergarten together. It was a life changing experience for me - seen through the eyes of an artist -and connecting that environment with us at that age opened a world to me that eventually became my life. Thank you Rachel!
I did not see Rachel often because of transportation issues. She lived in Manhattan and I in Westchester. We usually phoned each other or waited until holidays to have a long conversation to catch up on our lives. She always waited for me in the living room so that we could have some privacy. I loved talking and listening to Rachel. She was not only an artist by career but also an intellectual. She could speak on any subject and offered her wisdom as a bonus. In addition, she was caring and always thought of others, never herself. She was a role mode to all who knew her especially her grandchildren. I will miss her.
In Remembrance, Eric's mother-in-law, Laura Giordano
