Phillip's obituary

Weese, Big Weese, Big D, Champ, Dr. Phil, Uncle Phil, Mr. Phil, Dad – a man with many names and many passions, Phillip Marshall Westberry passed away on August 23, 2020 at the age of 60. He was born on August 2, 1960 in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School and went on to graduate from The University of Texas in 1982 with a degree in Political Science, where he was a member of Beta Tau Alpha Fraternity and the Texas Exes. Phil worked for several companies in sales and account management through the years and received many awards for his efforts. He was an avid sportsman and loved Longhorn football, golf, and basketball. At 6’7”, he could take it to the hoop and drive it to the green with the best of them. His Beta brothers at the University of Texas and his AHSOP friends know his love of poker. “Hey, Champ!” were two of the last words he was able to speak.
Beyond his sales, sports, poker and singing and dancing talents, Phil looked for any opportunity to gather his friends and family together for fun and fellowship. There was no such thing as a stranger to him. Phil had a way with a crowd, and he made everyone feel welcomed and loved with his outstretched arms, humor, and hospitality . He had a way of making you feel special, and he was an excellent listener and really wanted to know YOU - your thoughts and feelings.
Phil loved and cherished adventure and traveling. Family cruises, Boy Scout campouts, tropical isle retreats, and whole family and friend vacations to the river and beach were yearly traditions. But of all these loves, laughter was paramount. Phil treasured his family and friends. He was married 20 + years to Penny Ash. His children, Reagan and Marshall, were the most important thing to him. His pride and adoration of them was beyond measure. The Ash family, AHSOP friends, and the Usual Suspects, were just a few groups that knew and loved him. He will be forever missed by us all and we will all be left with a Phil-sized hole in our hearts.
Phil is predeceased by his mother, Patricia Phillips Westberry. He is survived by his daughter, Reagan Westberry, and son, Marshall Westberry of Briarcliff. Additional surviving family members include his father, James Ray Westberry of Dallas, sister and brother-in-law, Diana Westberry Fink and Rick Fink of Bandera, brother, James Thomas Westberry of Portland, nieces Beth Maciulewicz and Savanah Ash, and nephews, Ricky Fink, Will and Wesley Ash.
Phil’s celebration will be held at a future date when we all can safely gather in Austin to raise a glass, sing a song, and share stories together. If you would like information about the date and place of the future celebration, contact Diana Fink at dianawfink@gmail.com.
