Philip's obituary

>Philip Sweet went home to Jesus on July 29, 2025 at age 85.

Philip H. Sweet Jr. was born on November 11, 1939, to Philip H. Sweet Sr. and Michelle Sweet. A fifth-generation Californian, Philip grew up with a love for trains that carried into his adult years, but his greatest passions were always his family, his faith, and his music.

As a boy, his sister Sandy was his closest confidant, and the two leaned on each other through their growing-up years in Southern California. At 23, Philip met the love of his life, Janice, while he was pursuing music and working for the railroad with Union Pacific and later Southern Pacific. Their bond was immediate and lasting, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and song.

Philip’s gift for music led him and Janice to record for various labels during the 1960s and 70s. In 1976, he and Fred Imus co-wrote the country single “I Don’t Wanna Have to Marry You,” which became a #1 hit for Jim Ed Brown and Helen Cornelius after first being recorded by Philip and Janice. That same year marked an even greater turning point: Philip, Janice, and their children, Robert, Lisa, and Michael, gave their lives to Jesus Christ, a decision that defined the rest of their journey together.

As his children grew, Philip’s love for music lived on through them. Robert and Michael went on to form the Christian rock band Stryper, carrying forward the musical legacy that he and Janice had begun years earlier. He watched with pride as their music reached countless people, knowing his influence was woven into every note.

On June 29, 2025, Philip passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Janice; his daughter Lisa and her fiancé, Don; his son Robert and his wife, Victoria; his son Michael and his wife, Lisa; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Each of them carries a piece of his heart and will forever remember his laughter, his encouragement, and his unwavering love.

Philip was more than the roles he held, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, he was a man who loved deeply, gave generously, and lived with faith at the center of all he did. His legacy is one of music, devotion, and joy, but above all, of family.

The family will hold a private celebration of Philip’s life on his birthday, November 11. It will be a gathering not only to remember his life, but to celebrate the love, laughter, and music he shared with everyone blessed to know him.
