Norman's obituary

Norman Dean Weibel, 87, leaves behind daughters Carol Wise (David) and Deana Weibel-Swanson (Glen), son Carl Weibel, and sister Phyllis McElroy, as well as grandsons Damon Allgire, Erik Schmitz and Luke Swanson and several great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Dorothy Goetsch Weibel, sisters Laurel Truman and Dorothy Stelling, brother Robert Weibel, and grandsons Brandon Weibel and Justin Schmitz. The youngest of five children born to Dare Weibel and Alice Summers Weibel, Norman (known as Dean to his family) grew up in Escondido, California. He graduated from Escondido Union High School, having spent time as both the head of the Chess Club and the captain of the Wrestling Team. Norman joined the Marines in 1951 and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the Marines in August 1954. After earning a BA in history and an MA in educational psychology, Norman became an educator in the California state system, working as a teacher of the handicapped and severely disabled. Upon retiring in 1989, Norman undertook several vocations, including writing extensive poetry, authoring the novel Raised Christian Style (a dark work of fiction based on abuses he saw while employed as an educator) and, after becoming a minister in the Universal Life Church, serving as Chaplain of American Legion Post 14 in San Bernardino for many years. Norman was adventurous, playful, curious, creative, deeply proud of his military service, a lover of cats, a voracious reader and watcher of movies, and a warm and friendly neighbor. He will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, a charity Norman supported.
