Nancy's obituary

Nancy Ann Thomas Sbarbaro lost a difficult battle with pancreatic and liver cancer on October 17 , 2021. Nancy was born on August 2, 1948 in Denver, Colorado. She was the second oldest of four children to Max and Florence Thomas. Her surviving three siblings are Bill Thomas, Barbara (Cendak) and Michael Thomas. Nancy grew up in a close and supportive Irish family in San Francisco. She graduated from St. Rose Academy High School in 1966, and then went on to graduate from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in San Francisco in 1969. Before her completion of nursing school,

Nancy married her soul mate, Gary Sbarbaro, on December 21, 1968 in San Francisco. After Nancy graduated from nursing school and upon Gary’s return from the military, they moved to Redding in 1970 and were blessed with two children, Tiffany and Michael, as well as two grandsons, Jacob Thomas (22) and Bryson Patrick (17). Nancy’s immeasurable compassion and ability to care for people led her to be a highly respected and competent ICU nurse where she worked at Mercy Hospital in Redding. She cared for her patients for more than 37 years before retiring to care for Gary who suffered and lost his 20 year battle to Alzheimer’s in 2019.

Nancy had many passions during her life that kept her happy and busy, including traveling the world, gardening, bowling, caring for her three rescue dogs, swimming at the YMCA every morning, and Wednesday movie dates with her gal pals. But more than anything, she loved to spend time with her immediate and extended family, especially at yearly family reunions in Ft. Bragg.

There will be a celebration of life for Nancy on November 6, 2021 at 1:00pm, at Gaia Hotel and Spa in Anderson, CA. Nancy loved bright colors and Hawaiian prints, as well as the color purple. The family is asking friends and family to attend in casual and colorful attire.

In addition, due to the constantly changing nature of the pandemic, the family is requiring that all guests who plan to attend Nancy’s celebration be fully vaccinated and be ready to provide documentation.

Lastly, Nancy has kindly asked that no flowers be sent in her memory. If you would like to make a donation in memory of Nancy, she has requested it be made to Tails of Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue shelter in Shasta County that rescues, rehabs, and rehomes dogs of all ages, breeds and ailments from shelter euthanasia lists. Checks can be made to Tails of Rescue, or you can visit the website and make a donation online at tailsofrescue.org. Please include Nancy’s name on your donation to help track the allocations in her memory.
