Nancy's obituary

Nancy Brown Burton from Los Altos, California passed away on January 3, 2021 after a short battle with COVID-19.

Nancy was born and raised in Forest Hills, New York to Harold and Marguerite Brown, one of four girls. After graduating from Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, earning a major in music, she met her husband Franklin Burton at church in Boston, Massachusetts. They married in 1957 and started their family before moving to Los Altos, California in 1963.

Nancy was a loving, attentive and nurturing mother, raising five children. While juggling this enormous responsibility, Nancy also made time to work part-time at Los Altos Library and participate in her local community, church, and schools. As an active member of the Foothills Congregational Church, her greatest joy was as a singer in the church choir for many years. Nancy was also an avid pianist and would play whenever she had the opportunity.

In addition to her passion for music, Nancy enjoyed playing tennis, cooking, gardening, the theatre, hiking, working with children through her volunteer work and spending time at Lake Almanor, CA. More importantly, making time to be with her family was always not only a treasure to her, but a priority as well.

Nancy’s love for the outdoors started early on in her life. She became a camper as a child and was later a counselor at Camp Allegro on Silver Lake in New Hampshire, alongside her sisters Peggy, Ellin and Sandy. Later in life, she furthered this enthusiasm, enjoying long hikes in the Lake Almanor area and at Mt. Lassen National Park with her husband, family and friends.

Nancy was also known by her friends, neighbors and co-workers as a bit of a social butterfly. Her work at the local library allowed her to greet and meet new people, extending her caring personality and friendly smile to whomever she encountered. She was active in nurturing her personal relationships, hosting bridge parties and dinner clubs with her friends. She was also always one of the first to make it a point to meet her new neighbors, bringing freshly baked cookies or other delectable appetizers as a welcoming warm gesture.

Nancy is preceded in death by her loving husband of more than 50 years, Franklin Burton, as well as her sisters Peggy and Sandy. She is survived by her sister Ellin, her daughter Nance, sons Robert (Cheryl), David, Lee and Glenn, and her grandchildren Robert (Veronica), Kathryn (Brian), and Marcus.
