Personal note from Mary and Owen

Today, Dec 11, 2020, Mike Wiley was laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery (Columbarium VII, Wall I Niche 61-B) with Navy Funeral Honors in a private ceremony. The Wiley Family would like to ask you to take a moment to remember Mike Wiley.

Lift a glass in his honor. Make it special as he would have made it for you. Get out your blender, add whip cream, or light it on fire. With a sparkle in his eye and a smile, he would graciously offer all his guests, friends, and family a special concoction made just for the occasion and just for you. That was the kind of guy he was. If not a cocktail, then a bowl of ice cream with whip cream, chocolate syrup, and a cherry on top will suffice. Go that extra step to make it rememberable, because that is how Mike lived his life.

Mike loved good food and an outstanding beverage. He would hunt for the best places in town – Pilipino Adobo to Japanese An-Pan to Crullers to Steamed Mussels. You name it, he wanted to experience it. He would spend hours perfecting his smoked barbeque, finessing his sauerkraut, or super-charging his homemade cookies so he could share his goodies with friends and family or the oncology nurses at OHSU.

His love of music was not just about his admiration of gifted musicians that seem to truly speak to him. It was also about people gathering to enjoy the music, running into friends, partying, eating and drinking, and the sense of community. He never missed Summer Concerts at Fernhill Park and enjoyed many, many outdoor concerts and festivals throughout his life.

His good humor, even if it was sometimes inappropriate sprinkled with sexual innuendo and maybe went over some people’s heads. He would give you that smile and you knew that we all were laughing together.
The Wiley-Fortun family, Owen, and I are so very blessed to have known Mike. He showed his strength and his resolve through his battle with Cancer. Although his life was not always easy, he made the best of it. As a family, we made it our goal to focus on making memories, and that we did.

Thank you to everyone. Owen and I are overwhelmed by the immense show of support in memory of Mike Wiley. We are truly grateful for the kindness and it warms our hearts to know he touched so many people so profoundly. Mike truly found and focused on the parts of life that made life special.
