Medina's obituary

Medina McLaughlin, age 46, of Fresh Meadows, Queens, and Hampton Bays, Long Island, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 29, 2026, at her home in Yonkers, New York.

Born Medina Dervisevic on February 20, 1979, at Kings County Hospital, Medina was the beloved daughter of Bada and Zuhdija Dervisevic. She was raised in Fresh Meadows and was one of four children, with older brothers Ned and Enes, and a younger sister, Enisa. Though third in birth order, Medina was often a natural leader within her family, known for her strength, steadiness, and quiet guidance.

From a young age, she was clever, ambitious, and unmistakably herself, carrying a subtle Montenegrin flair that brought warmth and character to her world. Creativity came naturally to her, and by the age of sixteen she had already mastered the art of creating with both her hands and her heart. She inherited her mother’s kindness and her father’s strength, always looking out for her two brothers and being her baby sister’s greatest cheerleader. She delighted in bringing people together, was known for her exceptional Turkish coffee, and took great pride in making kačamak for those she loved.

Medina pursued a career in healthcare, graduating from BOCES School of Ultrasonography, and went on to work as an ultrasound technician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Harlem, New York, where she was respected for her dedication and compassion.

Medina met her husband, Conan, at the Opal Bar on 52nd Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan. Their life together was filled with adventure, traveling to Greece, Peru, and Spain, yet always returning to their favorite spot Oaklands on Dune Road to watch every Hampton Bays sunset. After many shared journeys, they were married on Long Island on July 29, 2023.

Those who knew Medina will remember her for her sincerity, warmth, loyalty, and, above all, the lengths she would go to for each and every member of her family and circle of friends. There were times that she didn’t always say much (if you knew her she would jokingly tell you English was her second language), but she always knew exactly what to say.

Medina was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband, Conan; her daughter, Mackenzie; her father, Zuhdija; her sister, Enisa (Micah); her brothers Enes (Razija) and Nedzad (Nermina); her brother in laws Liam (Debbie), Patrick, and Devin (Devin); and her cherished nieces and nephews, Alen, Aldiana, Isabella, Amar, Alma, Eric, Ryan, Kathleen, and Lexi. She was dearly loved by both the McLaughlin and Dervisevic families.

Medina was preceded in death by her mother, Bada Dervisevic; several of her uncles; and her close friend, Dan Ostie.
