Max's obituary
Max Eugene Thompson, (88), of Williamsburg, IA, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025 surrounded by family.
Max was born to Roger and Ilo Thompson on Aug 21, 1936 in Powersville, MO. After graduating from Unionville, MO High School in 1954, he went to Illinois to work on a dairy farm for a year. In 1955, he moved to Ottumwa to work for John Morrell & Co. After getting laid off, Max began his career with Clean Towel Service (now called Aramark Uniform Service) from 1958 - 1990. In his retirement years, he mowed for the Ottumwa cemetery where he made lifelong friends that were his supervisors.
In his lifetime, Max loved cars and purchased new Chevrolets from 1949 - 1957. He and his best friend were Scoutmasters with the Boy Scouts in Ottumwa in the late 60s. After he and his family moved to Marshalltown in 1975, he served as a Volunteer at the Kiwanis Club.
Max married his beloved wife, Kay, on May 24, 1974 in Chariton and were doting parents of their blended family. They shared a life of love and travel adventures with their children and his parents-in-law. Max’s favorite pastime was attending the stock car races at the surrounding counties as well as watching NASCAR. He had purchased a Shopsmith and taught himself how to turn wood pieces on a lathe. He crafted many beautiful pieces that his children and friends now have. His mother-in-law painted china so there are muffin stands and plates that they paired together. When grandsons, Austin and Brandon, arrived, Max spent his time with them to include crafting Native American items such as bows and other items, taking the family on annual vacations and some to teach about Lewis & Clark’s exploration.
After retirement, Max and Kay enjoyed living independently in the apartment with their son for many years. In 2019, Max and Kay moved to Highland Ridge assisted living in Williamsburg, IA to be near their daughter and son-in-law. In time, they embraced access to a strong social environment and support network. They gathered for conversation and programs in the lively community areas — and enjoyed the companionship of staff, friends, and family. Everyone enjoyed Max’s quick wit and jovial personality.
Max is survived by his loving children, Jeff Hoch, Jenny (Tim) Dille, Mike Thompson, and Cindy Nissar. He was a doting grandfather to Austin Francisco, Brandon (Kevin) Phelps, and Jaidann (Ted) Covert.
Max was predeceased by his parents, Roger and Ilo Thompson; his brother, John David Thompson; his in-laws, Dwight and Wilma Clothier; his brother-in-law, Ken Clothier; and most heartbreakingly by his beloved wife, Kay Thompson. These loved ones paved the way for Max in this final journey, and we find comfort knowing that they have welcomed him with open arms.
A burial gathering for Max will be held on May 24, 2025, at 11:00 AM in the Chariton, IA cemetery, where we will gather to remember Max's expansive heart, his jovial spirit, and his enduring legacy.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Max's memory may consider making a donation to "Safe Haven of Iowa County, 2783 US-6, Amana, IA 52334,” a cause he was deeply passionate about and where his daughter, Jenny, volunteers.
