Maureen's obituary
On October 7, 2025, Maureen Bird passed away surrounded by loving family at the age of 84. She leaves behind beloved husband Gerry, children Jean-Paul and Diane, Daniel and Nikki, Stephen, and Laura and Steve, as well as nine cherished grandchildren. Maureen was also one of four Norwood sisters—the matriarchs of a close-knit and loving extended family.
To know Maureen was to be inspired. She was a force of nature: determined, innovative, helpful, and fiercely principled. If a question arose, there were only two answers—her way and the wrong way—and we say that with love and admiration.
Maureen led a remarkable life across multiple careers. In the mid-1960s, she was a trailblazer in computer programming. She later taught mathematics at Georges Vanier and Earl Haig Secondary Schools in Toronto, where she co-led efforts to reform pension regulations for Ontario’s women teachers. She eventually founded a successful financial planning business. In each role, she excelled with intelligence, integrity, and passion.
After retiring, Maureen dedicated herself to Rotary Toronto and Rotary International, where she held countless roles and contributed to transformative local and global initiatives. She was a tireless advocate for equity and justice. Through Rotary, she helped establish Canada’s first centre for abused seniors, spearheaded a microcredit program empowering women in Malawi, became a trusted leader in securing matching grants for international projects, and so much more. Even into her 80s, Maureen could be found with power tools in hand, building and repairing with purpose.
Maureen’s legacy is one of courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. She was deeply proud of her accomplishments—and we were endlessly proud of her. Her impact will be felt for generations, and she will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A memorial event will be held in partnership with Rotary Toronto. Details will be shared in the coming weeks.
