Matthew's obituary

Matthew Wayne Kent, 72, of Bryan, Texas

December 18, 1952 – August 25, 2025

Matthew was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who entered the world on December 18, 1952, in Richardson, Texas, the son of Charles and Virginia Kent.

Matt grew up in Richardson alongside his older brother, Charles Kent Jr., and spent his childhood and early adult years in the Dallas area. He married Terry Barnett in 1969, and in 1970 they welcomed a son, Benjamin Matthew Kent. Matt went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from North Texas State University and later began his master’s studies at Texas A&M University. In 1980 he moved to Bryan, Texas, where he married Michele Durham that December. Together, they welcomed a son, Samuel Alden Kent, in 1983.

Matt earned a Master of Science degree in Horticulture from Texas A&M University in 1988 and went on to serve the university for many years—first as a Lecturer in the Horticulture Department and later as Facilities Manager for the department’s greenhouses. He retired in 2022, a milestone that allowed him to spend more cherished time with his children and grandchildren.

A man of many passions, Matt was deeply devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren, who brought him endless joy. He was also known for his lifelong love of plants and his gift for nurturing them—sharing countless seedlings and gardening wisdom with those he loved. Beyond horticulture, Matt found great pleasure in reading, music, and collecting records, pursuits that reflected his curiosity and appreciation for beauty in all its forms.

Matt was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Charles Kent. He is survived by his brother, Charles Kent Jr. (Silvia); his sons, Benjamin Kent (Heather) and Samuel Kent (Julie); his stepdaughter, Misty Taylor; and his treasured grandchildren, Averie Kent, Penny Kent, Carter Kent, Ryder Kent, and Archer Kent. He is also remembered fondly by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Matt will be remembered for his wisdom, warmth, and humor, and for the steadfast love he gave so generously to his family. He will be profoundly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 1:00–4:00 p.m. at Mayfield Cottage and Gardens, 3505 West 35th Street (Old Bull Creek Road), Austin, Texas 78703.
