2024
One of so many nights playing catchphrase with Mat and the squad. Over the years we developed our own set of rules (all absurd but strictly enforced). Mat was a real master of nonsense. He was always willing to get into the nitty gritty on a ridiculous hypothetical, and he would never back away from a ludicrous debate. He made everything feel like play. — with Stu Merrett, Louise Neave and Pierce Guse

Mat and I wearing matching clothes and doing a synchronized dance at one of his barbecue nights. He hosted us for every imaginable occasion—Friday nights, hockey games, Stampede, birthdays, goodbyes. So many of my favourite memories are at the Jobin house.

2018
When I first moved back to Calgary after university, Mat and I struck up an easy friendship centred around winter sports and our mutual abundance of free time. He shared the mountains with me, and he shared his friends with me, and because of his generosity on both fronts Calgary started to feel like home again. Here he is admiring a scraggly larch on one of our early adventures.

It is hard to find the words, but please know that my heart is with you during this challenging time. Mat was a remarkable young man and he will be missed by so many.

Having coached Mattie through many years of the Westwood Hockey program, I  had the privilege of experiencing his character first hand. He was a positive influence, great team mate and fun to be around and I watched him grow into an amazing young man. I also enjoyed those years of getting to know your family and was fortunate to have you as co-managers on many of those teams. The highlight of course was watching the team come together to win Esso Minor Hockey Week in 2010.

Please take comfort from these memories and big hugs always.

Rob

We were both heartbroken when we heard about Mat. Such a sweet, funny, full of life boy. He will be remembered for his smile.
As evident by other’s previous messages, Mat’s positive spirit and ability to bring a smile to the others will be greatly missed. He was not only talented and valued engineer, but also a fantastic teammate. He always jumped in with both feet to learn something new or progress an item along while ensuring that we always had a smile on our faces. My heartfelt condolences go out to you and everyone who had Mat within their lives.

During the pandemic, we shifted ‘work from home’ to ‘work from lake’. After the work day ended, there was time to hang out on the ‘bo@‘ before sundown.

Mattie crossing one of seemingly 100 little rivers/ravines. We thru hiked this iconic stretch only bringing tortillas, almond butter, Nutella and apples for food.
We are heart broken to hear this tragic news about Mat. We have the fondest memories of him through hockey, shared family time, boating in the Okanagan and spending time at the lake. Mat was a joy to be around with his easy going personality and ready smile. Please accept our deepest condolences at his loss. Ali, Nick, Erin and Jacob

Every hockey practice and every hockey game brought with it a smile and friendly warmth from dear Matt. Every class change at Queen E was made better for the twinkle in his eyes. Gary Perfect and Shauna, Stuart, Owen and Seth.

Mat was one of the first friends I made in grade 7. We shared many classes that first year and in the years that followed, but we quickly got to know each other in first term in Foods & Fashion. I remember telling my older brother Sebastian that I made a friend named Mat Jobin and he told me that he was friends with Mat’s brother, Alex, but that everyone called him “Jobin”. I followed suit, and pretty soon everyone knew Mat as “Jobin”. The nickname stuck so well that once when I referred to our Jobin as Mat, someone asked, “why didn’t you call him Jobin?”

I still remember Mat helping me to clean up a glass I shattered in Foods & Fashion. We were in most classes together throughout junior high and many in senior high, trading answers and jokes. He was kind, he was funny, and he was smart. I admired him for the brother he was, for his perfect comedic timing and the quips that livened up an English class. I was lucky to grow up with him.

There are no good words that can make sense of or ease this tragic loss. I hope that all who loved and knew Mat can find comfort in a life well-lived and much loved.

A few weeks ago, a Queen E classmate reached out to share she had found a Polaroid of our high school friend group tucked inside a book from Goodwill. At first, it felt like a fun coincidence, but now it feels like that photo was meant to resurface — giving me the chance to revisit old memories and reflect on the good times shared with Mat. This is the photo she found, it’s a favourite and brings me back to a very special time in my life — of the friendships we shared, countless hangouts, and Mat, who was always at the heart of it all. Mat was never one to miss a hangout or party—he was always the first invited, and the one you immediately looked for when you arrived. He had a rare gift of making everyone feel welcome, comfortable, and seen. His quick wit, hilarious chirps (I’m pretty sure he coined the term), and knack for making every moment better, whether through jokes, deep chats, or a fierce game of beer pong, are memories I’ll hold close forever. Mat was a highlight of my grade 7-12 years and a fundamental part of my growing up. His genuine presence, his ability to connect with people, and his unwavering kindness left a lasting impact—not just on me, but on everyone lucky enough to know him. He brought out the best in people, made you feel accepted just as you are, and had a way of lightening even the heaviest of moments with his humour and warmth. Although it has been a few years since I last saw him, I am deeply grateful for the time I got to share with Mat and the countless memories we made together. My heart goes out to his family during this unimaginable time. Thank you for raising such an extraordinary person and for sharing him with us all.

Mat was a valued TCE colleague and friend. He was known for his incredible sense of humor. Mat had a unique ability to make everyone around him laugh, even in the toughest of times. His jokes and infectious laughter will be deeply missed by everyone at the office. Beyond his humor, Mat was exceptionally intelligent and hard working. He had a sharp mind and a curious spirit, always eager to learn and share his knowledge with others. Whether it was through insightful conversations or thoughtful advice, Mat made a lasting impact on everyone he worked/encountered with.

Our deepest condolences from everyone at TC Energy to Mat's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

Kim Neil Alex Kai - just heard the devastating news about Matt. My heart goes out to all of you. Thinking about all the great hockey games and bday parties that Conor Fred Rebecca and I were a part of. Matt was a bright light and always the happiest kid in the entire group.  No words can express the sorrow
