Happy Birthday Bubbles! I miss you dearly, I know you are in heaven laughing at my jokes. Every time I see a 🐝 I think of you, here comes Martin messing with my mind! Have a big slice of cake for me ❤️🎉
My family thinks of Martin often. We still live in his home, my  husband loves feeding "Martin's Birds" ,and this year they are very happy! The Grapevines he planted are giving us shade and this year it looks like we will have tons of grapes. A few days ago was our anniversary and we were remembering the time Martin gave us a gift certificate for Otoro Sushi after he asked us what we were doing that weekend. I did not even realize at the time the same weekend was his birthday.  He was very humble and generous. We miss Martin very much and feel so blessed to have met him.  Happy Birthday Martin from the Spadaccini's

Martin with his great smiles! What a personality.
Martin's "Raise the Roof" cuz he's Soo TALL Dance. ;-D
Make jokes, eat, check all tools and heavy equipment listed on Craigslist, help people, "make fun of everyone evenly", work out, chop wood, explain how things worked, tease you, Rock out to music-especially Nickelback, meditate, feed his bees, and the birds, water his plants, problem solve, make more jokes, buy tools and heavy equipment... fix things, listen to music... laugh! (repeat)
In response to "What did Martin love to do?"
When Martin and I would go out to eat I would always let him order his food first. After he was done ordering and it would be my turn, I would look up at the waiter/waitress and say “nothing for me, my boyfriend thinks I’m fat!” He would get so embarrassed and couldn’t stop laughing. After awhile he started to play along. Great memories 💙
Martin definitely did not like rap! He made so much fun of the music I listened to. And boy you should have seen how he would “rap” 😂 miss you bubbles!

If you look back at my 7th grade year book from 1999 you can find this written on the inside: “Enjoy sleeping in! - Martin G.”
I just looked at the message for the first time in years, it made me laugh a little because sleeping in was not part of Martin’s Character, he had a million things he was always trying to check off his daily lists; it would be an understatement to call him productive, he was overly productive.  The projects were endless, he was the type of guy that would always get things done and had a great attitude and understanding in everything he did.  He wanted to help everybody in his path, and he sure succeeded in that! I read a book as a child and it stuck with me, it’s called ‘The Giving Tree’, I always thought that the book shared a solid lesson.  In my opinion Martin reminds me of the Giving Tree; He gave us good vibes, honesty, Kindness, advice, support and was an incredible example of what a good man really looks like.  He must have helped more people in the time I had known him than most people help others during their whole entire lives. Martin was the kind of friend that would always pick up the phone, he’d drop everything to be there for you whether that was helping a stranger with a stranded car up in Bonny Doon at 10:00 PM, or maybe he just wanted to argue about how good Nickelback is for an hour while explaining other bands are just “lacking that crunch”.  I’ll never forget one day back in High School my car wouldn’t start after class, Martin came through and he knew just what to do and started my car right away.  Another time that comes to mind is when we were housemates; my indoor one-eyed kitten Mae got stuck up in a redwood tree, and within about 20 minutes, Martin drove off picked up a ladder, came back and said “let’s rescue your Mae!”  One time I was feeling down and wasn’t wanting to get out of the house after a break-up, Martin dragged me out to Woodstock’s Pizza and promised me that he was going to make me laugh that night, he succeeded once again! I could write a book just based off of Martin helping and influencing others, the stories are endless and will be shared over and over again.   Martin had the determination to fix anything or everything, he had the passion to share his knowledge, he was a great teacher, he loved to explain how everything worked and pass his knowledge forward. He would truly listen to you whenever you needed to talk about anything.  I’ve heard some describe as an angel on earth, I agree with that, Martin is a real life hero. I am so thankful that I was able to call Martin a friend in this lifetime, through the tears and the laughter; He felt more like a brother to me and the memories of him will never die.  I love him and I’m going to miss him!  I’m not sure what happens after all of this, but I believe we’ll all see Martin again someday.  It seems like Martin just did everything right, I admire everything he accomplished, I find myself thinking everyday “What would Martin do?”

I can never explain how much you will be missed. I still pick up the phone to text you sometimes and it hurts everyday knowing I’ll never be able to talk to you again. You deserved the absolute best in life but I know you are happy and healthy right now. Forever missed my bubbles 💙

A letter from Jo-Ann Panzardi (teacher, mentor, co-worker and friend of Martin's):

Hello, Cabrillo Alums from 2007-2009, it is always very nice to contact you all, but today it is with sad news.

Martin Goulart, 34, Cabrillo engineering alumni, engineering instructor, and our friend passed away on March 9, 2021 in his home in Scotts Valley, surrounded by loving family and friends. We have set up an endowment to honor him. (details at the bottom of this email)

We met Martin as an eager re-entry civil engineering student with lots of knowledge from his years working in construction. He brought with him his easy-going manner, quirky humor, and positive energy and quickly became a part of the strong community of engineering students helping each other through the rigor of the curriculum. In 2008, he completed Cabrillo’s engineering program and transferred to San Jose State University where he received his BS degree in Civil Engineering.

From 2010 to his passing, Martin was an integral part of the civil engineering industry in Santa Cruz County as a civil engineer at Pacific Crest Engineers in Watsonville, CA where he worked among a team of engineers, many of whom are Cabrillo alumni, donors, and student interns.

In 2018 the Engineering Department began looking for an engineering instructor to teach the AutoCAD component of the ENGR 25 course. We put feelers out to our alumni and many recommended Martin as our resident expert in AutoCAD. It was exciting to have Martin return to Cabrillo, now in a mentoring role. His industry experience, enthusiasm, and caring, kind, and generous nature quickly made him a successful instructor. Even after his cancer diagnosis, he continued to teach by enlisting family members to drive him to campus, always showing up with positive encouragement for all.

The Pacific Crest Engineering, the Engineering Dept, and Martin's family and friends have established a scholarship endowment in his name. The donations received will be matched by the USDE Title V STEM grant to create a $15,000 endowment which will award scholarships to engineering students every year in perpetuity. If you wish to donate, please Donate here (link) and note “Martin Goulart Scholarship” in the special instructions space.

According to his family and closest friend, Martin was at peace with where he was in his life and was sung out of this life and into the next:

"If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad."

I never met Martin but I am forever grateful to him. He offered up his home to my daughter when she lived in Santa Cruz and needed to make a transition. He was a life line and a young man I wish I knew but his kindness will never be forgotten.
