Dear Alice

Even after 4 years Markus's qualities as a dear friend and as a remarkable human  being stay with me - his love of family, his kindness, his integrity, his dedication, his passion to do the right thing, his brilliance - the list is endless.  There were few like him - he was a true "mensch".  Knowing your beautiful family has grown and thrived since his passing is a real tribute to who he was and all he brought to your lives.  His presense will be forever felt.

Best always

Shirley

I was shocked to hear of Markus’s untimely passing a few years after it happened. I worked with Markus at the IMF and went on several missions to China together.  I fondly remember our jog around the ancient city wall of Xian and our mission/team meetings in hotel lounges or his office. Markus was a true Gentleman, a class act, always kind yet astute in his leadership of people and teams. As a junior economist who had managed to anger Chinese government officials over an unflattering analysis, Markus stood beside my work without a shred of hesitation, with courage and dignity, and never made me feel that he had done something special, which in fact he had. Over the years, Markus and I kept in touch, he was my main reference to get a job at Oppenheimer Funds, and the last time I saw him was in his office which I barged in uninvited. He showed warmth and friendship and talked about his son’s endeavors at a Hedge Fund. I often think of Markus, his keen intellect, integrity, courage, and kindness. My very belatedly condolences to his family.

It is now one year that we are missing you, brother. They say, time is healing, and yes it is. But today it feels as if it was yesterday you left us.

What remains is great memories, your laughter in my ears, your always good advices, your great family who we feel even more close to every day since then.

Stay well, beloved brother ❤️ we meet then later when it’s time for it. Our thoughts today are with Alice, Matias, Andres and Camila 😘😘😘😘

Liebe Familie Rodlauer!

In Gedenken,

Eva Heugenhauser

Dear Alice,

Dear Camila,

Dear Matias,

Dear Andres,

My deepest sympathies to all of you. It was a big shock for me to know that Markus is not among us anymore.

I always admired Markus for his talent, decency and courage. I never forget his smile and friendly face. I will miss him very much. I never forget our time together at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna (1981-1983).

Please contact us when you are in Vienna. We were supposed to meet each other, but the Corona pandemic hindered us to do so.

My thoughts and feelings are with you.

Warmest regards from Vienna

Dear Alice and kids,

Deepest of sympathies.  Markus was a gem.  The service was very moving.  I can see why Markus was so very proud of all of you.   He will live forever in your hearts.

Dear Alice, Camila, Matias and Andres, Many thanks for enabling us to zoom to yesterday's farewell to Markus. We in Austria were very grateful for the opportunity to hear so many amusing and touching episodes in the life of your family, friends and colleagues. Thank you also to the fine musicians who enriched the ceremony. What a joy to watch the videos of such  hilarious moments in Markus's life! We can well imagine that he was laughing too.
My deepest condolences to Markus's family. Markus was one of the very few people with great inspiration and trust, decency, compassion and humanity that I have been lucky to meet in my life and career. From the first moment you would meet with Markus he would inspire in you his trust that will live with you forever.

I had the privilege of having worked with Markus in the 1970s and a finer colleague I could not have been more blessed to find. I will always remember his warmth, gentleness, kindness, and sense of public service. He was one of a kind and I will truly miss the periodic times that we got together after I left the Fund.

I pray that his family is given strength in this difficult time for them and that they should know no further sorrow.

Dear Alice, Camila, Matias and Andres, thinking of You during this very painful day. We are so very sorry about the early passing of Markus. Gratefully we remember Your very nice visit in 2006 during the Soccer -World-Championship. We would have liked to have spent more time with Markus and You all.

In loving memory Christa Schlecht-Hoevel  and Matthias

What an immense loss. Markus was a wonderful colleague. I will always remember our banters about skiing in St Anton and credit bubbles in China at the end of David Lipton’s surveillance meeting table. He was simply a wonderful human being. My deepest sympathies. Xtoph

To Marcus's family, my deepest sympathies for your loss. I was fortunate to have dinner with him in mid October here in DC. I will never forget  his upbeat spirits. RIP Marcus. You have left a deep mark.
Myriam and I would like to send our deepest sympathy to the Rodlauer family for Markus’s loss. He was quite literally a tower of strength at the Fund for so many years. I first got to really know him in Manila 30 years ago, when Markus was res rep to the Philippines—I particularly recall our sweaty squash games at the Manila Hotel and our uncomfortable rides in the central bank’s armored car when security was on high alert. This assignment brought out Markus’ strengths—shrewd intelligence, great ability to make personal connections, courage in the face of adversity. We again had the chance to work together closely twenty years ago when we were together in WHD when Markus’ very broad shoulders were  brought in as a key reinforcement for the front office under enormous pressure from multiple country crises. We always stayed in touch and enjoyed many happy meals with Markus and Alice over the years. His far too early departure is a huge loss for all of us.

Dear Alice, Matias, Andres and Camila,

We are so very sorry for your loss. These are very hard times for you but hopefully sharing all these wonderful memories of Markus and knowing how much people cared about him, bring you some comfort and help ease a bit your pain.

Markus was such a lovely gentleman in so many ways. Either entertaining us with interesting stories at social gatherings, or stopping by briefly to say hi on his way to SPR’s Front Office, or smiling effortless while sweating hard at the Fitness Center’s rowing machine. Markus was always on-the-go with a big smile! And that’s how we’ll keep him in our hearts.

Thinking of you,

Manuel and Luzmaria
