Dear Clara, dear Nick, dear Ryan, dear Jessica, dear Nick,
Dear friends,
My name is Jan, and I am from the German side of the family. Maria’s grandmother and my father are siblings. For many years, we have been in contact through the older generation, but especially in the last two years, the connection has passed on to us, the younger generation.
I saw Maria, along with the others, just a few weeks ago on the North Fork, and we spent a beautiful Saturday together with music, the beach, and later at a brewery festival. On Sunday, we all went for a walk in Greenport, and she said to me, "Jan, we’ll see each other soon."
What hurts me so much today is how often we say goodbye, not knowing that sometimes it is the last time. That's why I tell myself I want to remember and cherish the moments.
I saw Maria far too rarely, spoke with her too little, and hugged her too infrequently because I thought we had all the time in the world, and after all, she is family.
On that day, her father gave me a book as a gift. That book will be a symbol for me, a reminder to always think of Maria.
I wish you all strength, and I pray for her.
