With heavy hearts and deep love, we share the passing of our beloved mother and wife, Maria Catherine Coombs Hunter. A woman of grace, wisdom, and fierce love, left this world on February 14, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones, with great love, in peace. 

Maria lived with unwavering compassion and deep devotion to her family and community. She was a wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother (Nana), God-Mother, and friend. She was known for her wisdom; fiery spirit that was never afraid to speak her mind; compassion to help others; and having a heart that made space for everyone. The beauty of her was much more than surface level, it was in her words, actions, and ability to see the good in everyone.

On Saturday, August 23, we will honor her wishes with a sea burial surrounded by those who loved her most. Her ashes will be scattered into the water, as in tradition in both the Wampanoag and Cape Verdean cultures-- returning her spirit to the elements with love and reverence. Her spirit and legacy will be carried in every wave, every breeze, and every quiet moment of strength.
