Marcus's obituary

Marcus Colby Steinman

October 21, 2001 – October 4, 2025

Marcus Steinman, 23, of Topsham, Maine, tragically passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2025, as a result of an automobile accident.

Born in Brunswick, Maine, on October 21, 2001, Marcus was the beloved son of Geoff and Kristin Steinman, and the cherished younger brother of Jacob. Though his parents later went their separate ways, they remained united in their deep love and pride for the remarkable young man Marcus became.

Marcus attended Topsham schools and graduated from Mt. Ararat High School in 2020, where he played both basketball and soccer. He went on to attend the University of Maine at Orono, where he earned his degree in Business Management with a minor in Marketing. During his time there, he was a proud and active member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, where his warmth, humor, and easy smile made a lasting impression.

Following graduation, Marcus began a promising career as a District Sales Manager for Frito-Lay, where his strong work ethic, leadership, and natural people skills quickly stood out.

Marcus was an unassuming soul with a heart that stretched far beyond himself. He loved people fully and without hesitation—always saying “I love you,” always ready with one of his legendary hugs, and always showing up when someone needed him. He was kind to strangers, deeply empathetic, and had a gift for making everyone feel seen.

An adventurer at heart, Marcus was happiest outdoors—disc golfing, hunting, fishing, watching sunsets, or staring up at the stars. He treasured family traditions like the annual tubing trip and loved traveling and exploring new places, especially his most recent unforgettable trip to Sedona.

Marcus and his brother Jake shared countless adventures and an unbreakable bond; they were best friends. They often joked that they “carried each other like a backpack” whenever they competed together, and they loved teasing their mom by secretly slipping rocks into her backpack during their Sedona trip. Their relationship was built on laughter, loyalty, and the kind of love that only brothers can know.

Marcus had a knack for finding joy in life’s smallest moments—the right song on a drive, Diesel’s happy bark, or the comfort of his favorite black Nike socks (often the subject of brotherly “theft” accusations). He lived in the moment and often reminded others to do the same—put down the phone, be present, and love your people while they’re here.

He was a loyal New England sports fan, cheering on the Celtics, Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins with unmatched passion—never afraid to place a friendly bet and brag just a bit when he called it right. He also loved everything about Mt. Desert Island and was never happier than when surrounded by its beauty. He played fiercely on the basketball court—sometimes fouling out with a grin—but always giving his all. His gamer tag, “icefishhunt,” perfectly captured his love for the outdoors and the playful side that made everyone smile.

But beyond sports and laughter, it was Marcus’s deep capacity for love and forgiveness that defined him. He never held grudges and approached life with grace and humility. Whether it was weekly outings with his family, time with friends, or quiet nights with Diesel, Marcus lived with his whole heart.

Marcus is survived by his loving parents, Geoff and Kristin Steinman; stepmother, Kristy Steinman; and stepfather, Phil Mather; his big brother, Jacob; step-siblings, Austin, Mikala and Kelsea; uncles Scott (and his wife Shauna), Todd, and Guy Steinman; cousins Kelsey and Liam McLean and Corey Steinman; as well as extended family members and countless friends who loved him deeply.

He was predeceased by his grandmothers, Brenda McLean and Fay Steinman, and his uncle, Chad Steinman.

A celebration of Marcus’s life will be held on Thursday, October 16th, from 3–7 p.m. at Bailey Island Library Hall. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, and honor the beautiful life he lived.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marcus Colby Steinman Memorial Fund, which will go toward creating a lasting tribute in his memory—one that reflects his love of the outdoors, sunsets, and the people he held close.

Marcus was the most laid-back guy with a ferocious (yet reasonable) side—the one who made everyone feel like they belonged. He never put himself above others, and his empathy and warmth left a mark that can never be measured.

The loss of Marcus is immeasurable, but so is the love he leaves behind.

We love you forever, Marcus. Two bongos, everywhere we go. ❤️
