Thinking of you on your birthday Mahesh. You and your family in India and Canada, and Indira and Lauren - all who lost someone very special to them and I know still miss you very much. You would be 42 today. Rest in peace brother. May the waters of Hawaii hold your heart extra close today.

It is still so strange.
We took Indira to see bits of the world this Christmas. She surfed five days and got up straight away. Rode allllll the way into beach. And then paddled alllll the way out to the break. You would have been so proud. We had many moments in the surf where we thought about how great a surfer you are and loved the water. Your memory lives on in these moments. You are gone but not forgotten.

For Mahesh, I can only remember how pure he was as a human being.
We worked together to change the world and Mahesh was extremely passionate about it.
My sincere wish he will always be happy and full of force somewhere in the universe.

Years ago in Hawaii, when we were living young and wild and free, I met a charismatic DJ/surfer from Punjab who was working at Star Beachboys Waikiki. I think we had both been up late at night but as is usual for me I still got up first thing in the morning and headed to the beach. It was quiet and still and although the noise of the night was still ringing in my ears the soothing rhythm of the sea created a soft layer on top of the receding nighttime din. Rey Mahesh was setting up for the busy day ahead but as we both stared out to the sea I felt that there was an instant connection - a bond - that he understood at that moment. Punjabi music, Dance music, Surfing and a free spirited attitude to life. It resonated. Over the years, every time I went to hawaii I would see him and his cheery welcome and I would feel that he understood how the different worlds around us connected together. He had a deep love for the sea and for music. We both settled down a little after that time. He got married and he had a beautiful baby girl Indira with his lovely wife Lauren M Pandey. I had two kids of my own. He had grand visions and we would laugh about how my grand vision to be a waterman in hawaii, which he already was, while he would talk about multinational corporations and world finance, which I had left behind 🙂
The years following were never exactly smooth sailing or easy for Rey, especially following an ocean accident in which he was hit in the chest by an outrigger canoe. He suffered pain and was not able to surf as well as he used to. I know that he struggled with himself to find his place in the world. He moved to the mainland and I did not see as much of him. He would call and talk about how he wanted to do one grand world vison thing and then another. I felt I couldn't keep up with his thoughts as I was so centered on simple things in life at that stage - my kids, the ocean, simple happiness of world travels not complicated by complicated corporate thoughts. I had zero ambition at the time to take over the world in any way 🙂 So we drifted apart a little but whevever I did see him he had the same generous Aloha spirit. I hoped that he would eventually find peace and stability.
Unfortunately, I learned today from his wife that he passed away last month, just shy of what would have been his 40th birthday today. While I am saddened and feel especially for his 7 year old daughter Indira, I do want to remember the bright spirit that he had when he was able to bring everything together. And that special mix of ocean, music and life that to me is so important. So remember to celebrate life and to make the most of every day that comes. May you find peace and happiness wherever you are after this life, bradda Rey

I loved engaging in conversations with Mahesh. He was a visionary who had many aspirations in life- from having surf schools in Southern India to promoting the Russian concept version the like of Maserati ! He talked very fast and it was hard to slow him down. I’ll miss you buddy !

I remember when I met Rey on a flight bound to HNL. He exuded a bright light and was so cool and kindhearted. His spirit and legacy lives on through your beautiful daughter and in the hearts of all who were blessed to have met him. May he be riding the perfect wave in eternal paradise and surrounding your ohana with love and protection.
Aloha oe Rey and a hui hou
