Background
Some losses hurt not only because of what was—but because of what we hoped could still be.
Today, I lost my mom, and the grief I feel is layered and complicated. Our relationship was never easy. When I was very young, my siblings and I were given to her parents, and for many years she struggled with addiction and unhealthy relationships over being present in our lives. That absence shaped me in ways I am still untangling.
It wasn’t until I was about 16 that I truly began to know her again. What followed were years of ups and downs—moments of connection, followed by distance, mood swings, and heartbreak. She struggled deeply with her mental health, and while we never fully reached the healthy, close relationship I always wanted, I never stopped hoping we would. I always believed there might still be time.
Despite everything, she was my mom. And her death hurts—because love doesn’t disappear just because a relationship was broken or incomplete. I am grieving her, and I am also grieving the relationship we never got to finish healing.
As a mother myself, this loss has also strengthened my commitment to breaking generational cycles for my own children—to choose presence, stability, and love even when it’s hard. Honoring my mom’s life with compassion is part of that healing for me.
We are asking for help from our community to fund her celebration of life ceremony. We want to lay her to rest with dignity and grace, acknowledging both her struggles and her humanity. Funeral and memorial costs are overwhelming during a time of grief, and any contribution—no matter how small—will go directly toward honoring her life and allowing our family the space to say goodbye.
If you’re unable to donate, sharing this or keeping our family in your thoughts means more than you know. Thank you for holding space for a story that isn’t perfect—but is honest, human, and full of love.
With gratitude,
