We are deeply saddened to announce that Mrs. Mary Leela Edward, beloved and devoted wife of Christy Edward, passed away peacefully aged 79, on Friday 23rd. July 2021.

Leela was the daughter of the late Mr. S.J. Vedanayagam and late Mrs. Susan Vedanayagam, daughter-in-law of the late Mr. Peter Benedict Swampillai and late Mrs. Mary Magdalane Swampillai, stepmother of Johann and Peter, Mother-in-law of Isabelle and Philippa, grandmother of Juliette, Chloe and Lola, and sister of Mrs. Philomena Edward (USA), the late Jeyarajah Vedanayagam, Pushpam Regis, Andrew Vedanayagam (Sri Lanka), and Wigna Vedanayagam (USA).

Leela enjoyed her strong alto singing voice most of her adult life and, took part in operas at her high school, St. Bridget’s Convent, in Sri Lanka. She was a staunch catholic and a choir leader for many years at St. Lawrence Church, Wellawatte, Sri Lanka encouraging and training youngsters to take part in and enjoy singing. She was a lover of music of many facets and origins.

Leela was a philanthropist at heart, especially to those in need and the rejected. She opened her heart to anyone in need of Love and affection. As her friends will also readily testify, Leela was a tremendous host, always wishing to comfort others.

Leela’s legacy is LOVE, she will be sorely missed by her loving husband, sisters, brothers, in-laws, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, family friends and lifelong school friends.

We take solace that she is finally able to rest and find peace with her beloved mother and father. May her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
