Larry's obituary

Larry A Stouffer died suddenly of cardiac arrest at his home in Dahlonega on June 1 with his wife and children by his side. He was 72. Born in Harrisburg, PA, he was the son of the late Emory E. Stouffer and Jacqueline (Diffenderfer) Stouffer.

In addition to his wife, Vicki (Watson), originally from Blue Ridge, GA, he is survived by a daughter, Allison Kopp (Brandon), of Atlanta and a son, Charles Emory, of Cumming. Also surviving are: two brothers, Colonel Thomas D Stouffer, USMC (Ret.) (Deanna), Winchester, VA, and Philip C Stouffer, Ph.D., (Kellen Gilbert, Ph.D), Baton Rouge, LA; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

He grew up in Lancaster County, PA, and graduated from Elizabethtown Area HS, where he was an accomplished athlete and respected student leader. He was selected for the prestigious Pennsylvania High School football Big 33 Football Classic and received an athletic scholarship to Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. He was later selected by his Beta Theta Pi Fraternity to join the Ravens Claw Society, in which he was proudly active throughout his life.

In 1969, he signed onto the USS Eltanin, an oceanographic research ship then assigned to southern latitudes in the Pacific Ocean. Seeking greater challenges, he signed off in Auckland, NZ, and with two friends bought Heather, a 23-foot wooden cutter. They sailed to Tahiti, where Larry sold his share and signed as a cook onto the three-masted topsail schooner Regina Maris. After several adventures at sea, in Chile, and in Peru, he returned to Elizabethtown where he entered the construction field at which he excelled for the rest of his life.

In Lewes, DE, he first concentrated on 18th Century homes. In 1978, he moved to Georgia and in Atlanta, oversaw estimating and construction for Metro Development Corp. He then met his wife Vicki, and they married in 1984. Together they established LVS Homes in 1990, noted most especially for eco-friendly, custom homes that Larry designed and built.

In addition to home construction, Larry was a talented, traditional craftsman who built several 19th Century wooden boats.
He was known for his ethical and reasoned approach to all challenges and youthful sense of humor. He was inherently kind, deeply spiritual and a true mentor to family members and many others he knew. Larry was also committed to a progressive agenda and actively supported the Lumpkin County Democratic Party and co-led the Climate Coalition Lobby—Dahlonega Chapter.

In all things, he was truly larger than life. Most importantly, he was totally committed and eternally devoted to family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Larry Stouffer to Enota CASA (enotahcasa.org/donate/) or Habitat for Humanity—Lumpkin County (www.habitatlumpkin.org) either online or by mail.
