Kevin's obituary

Kevin Wendell Swain, 59, passed away on October 19, 2023 in Torrance, CA after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born on April 13, 1964 to Thomas and Marian Swain in Topeka, KS. In the early 70's Kevin's family moved to rural Baldwin City, Kansas where he attended Vinland Elementary, Baldwin Junior High and Baldwin High School, graduating in 1982.

After graduation, Kevin attended the University of Kansas and worked as an Associate Pastor at Monticello United Methodist Church. In 1988, he married Michelle Tuller, with whom he had two children. Later, Kevin obtained a degree in Political Science from Ottawa University in 1994 and pursued law school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He eventually transferred to Washburn Law School in Topeka, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and served as the editor of the law review. Throughout his life, Kevin worked at various law firms but was continually drawn back to the ministry. He served at Terra Heights Baptist and Southwest Baptist churches in Topeka, and was associate pastor at Wyandotte UMC.  He attended St. John's School of Theology.

Kevin is survived by his daughter, Bethany, and his son, Dylan (Ciara). He is also survived by his sister, Marne Mitchell (Greg), his brother, Kirk Swain, and his girlfriend, Adriana Oleh. Additionally, he leaves behind his nieces, Samantha and Macy Green, and his great-nieces, Adelaide and Vaida. Kevin was preceded in death by his parents and his adored Grammy Gates.

Kevin's life was tumultuous and wrought with contradictions. He was a deep thinker and suffered an ongoing battle between his spirit and his addiction. He leaves behind a complicated legacy and a community of people who mourn both his loss and the painful barriers that prevented his long-term recovery. His family humbly asks that everyone gets their life together and/or quits smoking in his honor.

A service will be held at a later time and will be announced on his Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the LUNGevity Foundation. Donations can be made at https://fundraise.lungevity.o….
