Margaret Moon
2005, Colorado Springs, CO, USA
Joan Moon’s Apple Crumb Pie in the Moon family was a required dish at all holidays. It was a beloved family tradition. It is well known that the sibling rivalry among Moon brothers and sisters was intense, especially in trivia games. Well that rivalry spilled over to the Apple Crumb Pie Bake-Off of 2005 between David and Kathleen . Both fancied themselves the ultimate Apple Crumb Pie bakers. David with his special apple peeler from LL Bean and Kathleen with her deep dish style pie, both thought they would be the winner. The rest of the family would be the judges. How discriminating were we really? We loved all kinds of Apple Crumb Pie! Well the flour flew and the apple peeler whirred and they both presented their pies for the taste- testing. They were different in style for sure; one a traditional looking pie, the other a deep-dish style pie. Who would win? There was a lot of “trash talk” among the contenders, but the rest of the family had to dig in and do some serious tasting. What can I say- we loved them both! Who doesn’t love Apple Crumb Pie of any sort? However for years after Kathleen and David both claimed they had won the Apple Crumb Pie bake-off of 2005 and then the trash talk would inevitably get going again.
