Kari's obituary
Kari Elisabet Mekler (nee Nystrom) born in Wilmington, DE passed away on February 19th at the age of 55 after fighting a fearless battle of small cell lung cancer despite never smoking.
Kari received her bachelor's degree in Russian Language and Literature at Boston University in 1988 and was a member of the BU Women’s Varsity Crew Team. She settled into a career at a wealth management firm in Boston, later becoming a partner and supporting the firm for 28 years.
Having a competitive streak, Kari was a long distance runner in high school followed by her days cycling, walking, hiking, and rowing. She walked three marathons raising money for cancer research. She also cycled several century rides and multiple bike tours, on one of which she met her future husband. She was a regular donor with the Red Cross and served as a member of Easton’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
Kari was an avid supporter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and served on Easton’s Out of the Darnkness Walk committee. She was also a board member for Sarah’s Village Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to suicide prevention.
Most of all, she loved her summers spent camping with her family filled with laughs and adventures. She leaves behind her husband, Jerry, and daughters, Karinna and Erika. In addition, Kari leaves her mother, Karin (Mormor) and brothers, Karl and Kris.
No formal services will be held per Kari’s request. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Kari’s memory to Sarah’s Village at sarahsvillage.org.
