Joe and I met at the ICI gym (now known as AstraZeneca).  I was talking about running a marathon with another gym buddy and Joe overheard us and asked if he could join us.  We set up a training schedule.  From that time on, our friendship grew, and Joe became my best friend.  My wife, Beth, and kids loved him.  He was such a gentle soul.  We ran several marathons, half marathons, 10 milers, and shorter distances and partied whenever we could.  Beth and I enjoyed a secondment in the UK and Joe came to visit us in October 1998.  He told me that he had met a beautiful woman through triathlon training and told me "She's the one, Dave!"  The next year, I flew back from the UK to the States to be his best man.  I was quite honored.  Since that time, we always got together when he was in town and talked to each other at least once a month.  About 3.5 years ago, Joe told me that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer.  He was more than willing to take on this challenge.  We had the opportunity to meet in my hometown of West Chester, PA in March 2023 and again in July 2023.  That was our last meeting.  As time went on, therapies changed, some good, some not so.  But through all of what he was up against, he maintained his composure and always managed to stay positive and still had time to laugh. The day he was dying, I received a text from his beautiful wife, Melanie, telling me he didn't have much longer to live.  When I received that message, I called Melanie.  She placed the phone up to his ear and one of the things I remember saying to him was "When I meet you up there, buddy, we're going to have the run of our lives. I miss you, Joe.  Love you, man!"

To the love of my life for 25 amazing years, my heart hurts with you gone. But on Sunday a huge bunch of us celebrated your life to the max - there was Old Town Pizza and 49ers throughout. There was also so many people (family, friends, co-workers, etc) who traveled from far and wide because they wouldn’t miss celebrating your life for the world! The day was absolutely beautiful - the only clear day smack in the middle of lots of rainy days, kind of like our wedding day. The weather Gods love you too! Before the Celebration, we had a small gathering of family and close friends, in person and via zoom. Chaplain Steve spoke beautifully prior to others sharing Joe stories and sentiments. Your beautiful daughter Michelle put together a beautiful slide show of your life. I cry every time I watch it. No worries, they’re happy tears over our happy life together. (The Zoom video, Michelle’s slide show, and misc photos from the celebration are included.)
