Joseph's obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph "Joe" Stanislaus Schmidt Jr., aged 70, of Watauga, TX, who died on October 31st, 2025 @ the VA Medical Center in Dallas, TX after his heart failed due to lack of oxygen as a result of lung cancer.

Born on May 11th, 1955 in Barstow, CA, he was the child of Joseph Stanislaus Schmidt I, and Mary Stevenson Schmidt. Joe joined the U.S. Navy in August 1972 as a fighter jet mechanic aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt. His Squadron, known as the Fighting 84 Jolly Rogers, was recognized by their Skull & Crossbones. At the close of the Vietnam War, Joe was honorably discharged and returned home in August 1975.

After serving his country, Joe worked with his brother Steve at the Westinghouse Lighting Plant in Salina, KS. After its closure in the early 80's, he joined the family business (Industrial Saw & Grinding) in North Richland Hills, TX and worked there along with his father, two brothers, and, for a time, his nephews and his children until its closure in 2018. On August 28, 1982, Joe married Wanda Backhus, and raised a family. After they parted ways, she preceded him in death on November 30, 2010 at the age of 53.

Joe is survived by his son Joseph Stanislaus Schmidt III (and wife Ashley), along with daughter Amie Wood (and husband Timothy) and stepdaughter Samantha Valenzuela. Joe also leaves behind three grandchildren: Aly, Natalie and Chloe Wood.

Joe was a hardworking, sacrificial, private man who had a big heart for people and animals. He just didn't want you to know it. He loved working with his hands on cars, motorcycles, and around the house. He was passionate about politics and firearms.

A memorial service for Joe Schmidt Jr. will be held Saturday, November 22, 2025 @ 2PM @ First Baptist Church of Smithfield 7912 Main Street, North Richland Hills, TX 76182 with a reception to follow (light snacks, coffee, and dessert provided) and an open mic to share memories, stories, and tributes as desired.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to express sympathy donate to a memorial fund. You can donate here or send via Zelle to josephs6450@yahoo.com / 214-680-2550. PLEASE NOTE: RSVP HERE no later than Tuesday, Nov 18.
