Joseph's obituary

Joseph William Fitzpatrick died on November 18th, 2020. He was born in Concord, MA on May 20, 1927 to Josephine and Joseph W. Fitzpatrick, Sr. He graduated from Williamstown High School in 1945 and Williams College in 1950. Joseph served in the Pacific on the USS Topeka at the end of World War II. He married Selma Hickox, also of Williamstown, in 1950. Selma died in February 2004.

He leaves four children: Maureen Boisvert of Harwich, MA; Ann McMartin of Asheville, NC; Elaine Bodri of Gainesville, GA; and Joseph B. Fitzpatrick of Havertown, PA.; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Eleanor Galeski and a brother John L. Fitzpatrick.

Joseph worked for 35 years for Ciba Corporation (later known as Novartis) as a Research and Development Chemist and Group Leader in their dyestuff division. He is the author or co-author of 13 patents. One of these patents covered a vital process for the removal of toxic mercury from a chemical plant's effluent.

He served as the board chairperson of the Ocean County Mental Health Clinic and was an active member of the Democratic Party while living in Toms River. In Brewster, Joseph volunteered at the Council on Aging where he delivered Meals on Wheels and was a medical appointment driver for over 20 years.

Joseph was a passionate sports fan and he played high school baseball and basketball. He was also ice-skated, swam, and played golf and tennis. He enjoyed taking long walks with his black labs and more recently, loved exploring the woods and beaches of Cape Cod with his dear friend Marianne. He enjoyed nature in all forms, was an avid gardener and landscaper and took up kayaking and nature photography in his retirement. Trips with Selma to visit their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were highpoints. There were also frequent, happy trips back to Williamstown to visit friends, to attend events at Williams College and to enjoy the fall foliage.

Joseph was known for his kind-heartedness, integrity, decency, and devotion to his family and was well-loved by all who had the good fortune to know him.
