John's obituary

John went to be with His Savior on August 14, 2018 after a valiant battle with cancer. He defied the odds by outliving his prognosis as a gift to his family and friends. John was born in San Angelo, TX on June 15, 1976 to Gary and Nita Gaye Williams. He was raised in Robert Lee, TX. He earned a Bachelor’s in Public Speaking from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas where he was also a member of the Track & Field Team. He married, Laura Ann Young in 2000. He spent 12 years coaching track and field at SFA, Wake Forest University and Arizona Christian University. John devoted his life to Jesus and the ministry God called him to. He served in various youth and college ministries in his early life as well as the Minister of Discipleship at River Oaks Community Church in Clemmons, NC. He earned a Master’s in Divinity and Master’s in Biblical Studies from Carolina Evangelical Seminary. Ultimately, he follow God’s call on his life to plant Riverview Church in Surprise, Arizona as the Lead Pastor.

John had a love for people, sports/coaching, good Mexican food and Jesus. He devoted many hours to coaching teams at Lake Pleasant Elementary School in Peoria, AZ or his children’s sports teams, building relationships with people, watching college sports, sharing meals with friends and worshipping God in his actions.

John was a committed father to Amelia, Marikaya, Caleb and Jerrod. He loved nothing more but to watch them on the field, at school, in their home or on vacation.

He is survived by his parents, wife, children and grandmother Bonita Copeland of Robert Lee, TX; uncle and aunts Darryl and Myna Kay Copeland of Robert Lee, TX, Judy Williams of Robert Lee, TX; cousin Jerrod Copeland of Amarillo, TX, Holly Crutcher of Loveland, TX and Tiffany Thomas of Robert Lee, TX; niece Bailee Young of Flagstaff, AZ and in laws Alan, Sandy and Alison Young of Riverside, CA. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Les Copeland, grandparents Ruth and Sam Williams, and uncle Sherman Williams.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate John’s life on Saturday, September 1st at 10:00am at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Peoria, AZ. A live feed of the service will be streamed online. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Williams’ family.

He left this world too soon but taught us so much.
