John Stanley Sather
July 27, 1940 - June 14, 2025
John Stanley Sather, a remarkable man of unwavering love, wisdom, and generosity, passed away on June 14, 2025, at the age of 84. Born in southeastern Minnesota in 1940, John's family moved to Salem, Oregon, in 1948, where he spent his childhood and school years.
His parents, Edith Sather and Alf Sather, were both school teachers who instilled in him a love of learning. Family road trips to North Dakota and Minnesota to visit relatives were a highlight of his summers.
With a heart full of love and a spirit that touched countless lives, John “Stan” was more than a family man, mentor, or friend - he was a guiding light. His love and legacy continue to inspire all who knew him.
A multifaceted individual, John “Stan” was a scholar, gentleman, romantic, poet, math genius, world-class bridge player, angler, Air Force Captain, his MOS was he held the nuclear codes, retired Multnomah County sheriff, and accomplished attorney.
His academic achievements include a Bachelor's degree from Willamette University, a Master's degree from the University of Oregon, and a Juris Doctor from Lewis and Clark.
John “Stan” created the Bridge club at University of Oregon and played a pivotal role in building the Portland Bridge Club, leaving a lasting legacy in the community he loved. His generosity knew no bounds, and he gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities, driven by his passion for justice and his commitment to making the world a better place. John “Stan”, and he dedicated his life to fighting for what he believed in. John's “Stan’s” impact on those around him was immeasurable. His unconditional love, generosity, and wealth of knowledge inspired countless individuals to live better, give more, and make a difference. To those who knew him,
John “Stan” was a best friend, confidant, and fixer - always ready to offer guidance, support, and love.
John “Stan” is survived by his chosen family, who loved and cherished him deeply: - Chosen daughter, Amy Kimmons, (and her husband, Terry ) - Chosen grandchildren, Christianna Sanchez (and her husband Andrew), Stephenie Steigman (and her husband Jordan Sisler, Jordan Steigman (and his wife Ashley), and Terayn Kimmons - Chosen great-grandchildren, Avery Steigman, Aviana Sanchez, Roman Sanchez, Oliver Steigman, and Ozzie Sanchez
- Nieces, Jane Bush Harris (and her husband Colin Harris) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Anne Bush (Jennifer Magnani) of Seattle, Washington, and great-niece Estelle Harris John “Stan” was preceded in death by his loving wife Sally, his son, Marc Solon Sather, his parents, Edith Anderson Sather and Alf Sather, sister, Janet Bush, his brother in law and best friend, William Bush.
As we say goodbye to this extraordinary man, we take comfort in the knowledge that his life was well-lived, and his legacy will endure. John's (Stan’s) story is a reminder to live life to the fullest, to love without bounds, and to leave a lasting impact on the world. We will deeply miss him, but his memory will continue to inspire us to be better, to do more, and to give back.
