While many moments of John's life were tied to historical events, it is the smaller moments with friends, family, his students and colleagues that made his presence so special: a fishing trip, an ROTC ceremony, a Thanksgiving dinner. John appreciated simple things like a good book, strawberries, and tending to yard work, but also loved to talk about his trips …
