How you can help

This scholarship is given in memory of John Farias, by his wife Jamie Farias, who was the Athletic Trainer at Millis (MA) High School from 2006-2021. The scholarship will be awarded to one or more graduating seniors from Millis, depending on funds raised.

John and I always felt that students should be given opportunities to explore career paths outside of traditional college degrees, such as culinary arts programs and skilled trade schools. Often, these paths are overlooked or stigmatized, leading to missed opportunities for successful careers, and shortages in industries where there will always be a demand.

John earned his associates degree in culinary arts from Johnson & Wales University, and also trained and worked in the HVAC field; eventually starting his own successful HVAC business. He had dreams to return to the culinary industry as a caterer & food truck owner after our family's move to Florida in 2021. Sadly, he was not able to realize this dream, but I hope to use this scholarship to help propel a future chef or skilled tradesperson into a path where they can follow theirs.

In the event there are no candidates pursuing culinary arts or skilled trades, consideration will be given to applicants pursuing a career in healthcare(physical or mental), as first responders/civil servants (fire, police, EMS), in military service, or in service to students (school counselor, teacher).

I am so grateful for the amount of support we’ve received in confronting the realities of Johnny’s passing. It means so much to be able to give back in his honor, and with your help, I will be able to see this goal realized. All donations will go solely towards this scholarship fund/account, and I will share the results on this page. Please share the link to this page as you see fit to help me reach my goal.

Thank you so much for reading and for any and all contributions!

Personal note from John's Family and Friends

Johnny's courageous and hard fought two month battle in the hospital ended in his passing on January 16, 2024 with Jamie, the love of his life, by his side. If you knew Johnny you knew him to be the type of guy who willingly carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. He was a devoted husband and father who truly cared about those he loved, and he loved with all of his might. Johnny was one of the hardest working people many of us had ever met – taking pride in being the provider for his family. If you've ever been cold in the winter, Johnny was there. If you have ever needed a home cooked meal, Johnny was there. If you ever needed someone to stand behind you no matter what the cause, Johnny was there. Life threw a lot at him at times, from the outside and from within, and it's not wrong to acknowledge that those struggles existed. But to his core, Johnny was one of the good ones. He would want to be remembered for all the great times he brought us- with his tough guy exterior, while being a teddy bear on the inside, his sense of humor and maaaybe the occasional “off color” jokes , love of country music, and of course his phenomenal cooking. So often, he filled our lives with laughter, love, fun, food, and his innate drive to help—he was go big or go home, and he was always there when we needed him most. We will remember him dearly in our hearts.

John's Memorial Celebration of Life was held at Light on the Bay in Warwick, Rhode Island on May 27th, 2024. So many people contributed to making this event a beautiful tribute to his life, and every single person who helped- be it in the planning and preparation for it, the venue, the setup, the food, the memory boards, video presentation, speaking, cleanup after; and for everyone who attended, for the hugs, memories, and words of comfort- please know how much you were and are still appreciated.

As we find ourselves already at a year since Johnny left this life- please always feel free to still share memories, funny stories and pictures- be it on this page, Facebook, or through a call, text, or other messages- whenever the thought strikes. He is missed just as much no matter how much time passes- his absence will always be felt. His family is so appreciative of the incredible outpouring of love and support everyone has shown over this difficult time.
