John's obituary
John Everett Sloan, age 62, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 30, 2024 after a brief, but painful battle with cancer.
John was born on July 11, 1962 in Jacksonville, Florida. He remained in Jacksonville his entire life. During his senior year in high school, John joined the Florida Air National Guard. After graduation, he went to boot camp at Lackland Air Force base in Texas and then immediately went to tech school at Chanute Air Force base in Illinois. Because of his training, he was able to enjoy a very long career (40 years) as an aircraft engine mechanic for the Department of the Navy at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (formerly known as NARF and also NADEP).
John was bigger than life, the type of guy who would do anything for you, whether you asked or not. However, he would never ask anyone to help him. He loved his time with his children, Jennifer and Matthew and enjoyed watching them ride their horses many nights at the saddle club, camping and spending many days at Walt Disney World. When he was blessed with grandchildren, he was the best Papa you could ask for. A ‘bonus grandchild’ said ‘Mr. John is my best guy’. With his grandchildren, he continued his love of camping and trips to Disney World with them.
John leaves behind his high school sweetheart and wife of 43 years Robyn (Waller) Sloan; children Jennifer (Wade) Harris and Matthew (Joni) Sloan; four grandchildren: Kenneth Sloan, Hailey (Ian) Ray, Jessica Sloan and Miller Sloan; two bonus-grandchildren: Jaylynn and Madeline (Thomas and Katie Halliday). He also leaves behind his parents, Sandra and Richard Lane; sisters: Shirley Sloan and Dawn (Jude) Lane-Johnson; nieces, nephews, several cousins and aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his father, James Everett Sloan, his grandparents and favorite aunt and uncle (Kay and John Duval).
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 11th at 2pm at the home John worked so hard to make perfect for his family.
