John's obituary

Loving husband and father John R. Bryan, age 50, of Redondo Beach, CA, passed away peacefully on December 20, 2019 after a valiant and graceful 18-month dance with stage IV cancer. John was born and raised in New York City, brother to Peter and son to John F. and Jane Bryan. He attended the Buckley School in Manhattan and then The Westminster School in Simsbury, CT. After a distinguished high school career, he followed in his mother Jane’s footsteps at Vanderbilt University, earning a Bachelor of Engineering Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1993. At Vanderbilt, John served as an officer of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, building a deep network of lifelong friendships. John also discovered his passion for lacrosse at Vanderbilt, and found the love of his life, Fiona. He went on to earn a master’s in Business Administration from the School of Business at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1996.

John was a passionate, inventive, and visionary leader in smart grid technology, renewable energy, and energy storage, working for XCel Energy, CODA Energy Storage Systems, and most recently as vice president of Commercial Applications at EPC Power. He was deeply committed to innovating new business models for clean technology, improving processes and efficiency, and advocating for policy changes to create a sustainable, clean energy future for his children and the planet. His raw intelligence, drive, and self-confidence were balanced by his humility, integrity, and brilliant sense of humor. John embraced a good challenge and never settled for the status quo. He was a trusted ally to colleagues throughout his career.

John was an avid lacrosse goalie, the neighborhood dad, and genuine friend to all. He greeted everyone with a smile and a warm embrace, experiencing the world with wonder and marveling at the simple pleasure of spending time with his family. John is survived by his loving wife of 23 years and college sweetheart, Fiona Bryan; three children, William, Henry, and Katherine; brother, Peter Bryan and mother, Jane Bryan.

A celebration of life weekend for John will be held February 1–2, 2020. The Bryan family invites friends and family to a tailgate in honor of John’s love of the game at a lacrosse tournament at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, CA, on Saturday, February 1 at noon. John’s memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 2 from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at The Portofino Hotel & Marina in Redondo Beach, CA. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in John’s memory to The Cancer Support Community – Redondo Beach ( http://www.cancersupportredon… ) or the Redondo Union High School Boys Lacrosse Team (please venmo @Kristen-Shank and include "JRB donation" you will see the Redondo Lacrosse logo).
