John's obituary

Born on November 20, 1942, in DeRidder, Louisiana, John Benziger built a life marked by integrity, resilience, generosity, and a deep devotion to those he loved. His journey took him from Louisiana to Chicago, Illinois, and later to Austin, Georgetown, and finally Granger, Texas, where he enjoyed his retirement.

John is survived by his wife of 60 years and best friend, Carol Benziger, and their daughters Angel, Melinda, Julie, and Michelle. He is also survived by his sister, Jeanine,  numerous nieces and nephews, his grandchildren Ryan, James, Justice, Cheyenne, Allison, Jadyn, Reagan, and his great-grandchildren Francisco, Raelynn, and Rome. He was preceded in death by his beloved son Johnny; his sister Joan; his brothers Jayme and Jim; and his parents Jack and Winifred.

Independent, intelligent, and guided by strong ethics, John approached every chapter of his life with purpose. After graduating in Illinois as a chemist, he built a career in sales before founding his own scientific equipment marketing and sales company in Georgetown, Texas—a venture that reflected both his expertise and his entrepreneurial spirit. John also proudly served as a veteran of the Army National Guard.

John loved history and was an avid reader, always eager to learn and share something new. His hobbies were as diverse as his interests and included travel, wine making, fishing, and simply enjoying good food. Whether he was experimenting with his wine making or casting a line, he found joy in experiences that brought people together.

He valued family deeply and was a foster parent for several years, extending his home and heart to children in need. His lifelong commitment to the wellbeing and education of young people also included contributing a scholarship to a Taylor High School graduate, supporting their continued learning and future success.

John dedicated much of his time to uplifting his community. He was a mentor in Taylor ISD and taught ESL to non-English-speaking adults, helping them build confidence and opportunity. For several years in Kyle, Texas, he was a presenter at many career days and also delighted children as Santa Claus for five years at Negley Elementary School—a role he cherished.

A devoted philanthropist, John contributed to numerous charities and organizations, including the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Big Love Cancer Care, St. Jude’s, Make-A-Wish Foundation, KLRU, Starlight Symphony Orchestra, Annunciation Maternity Home, Southwestern University, Catholic Charities, Austin Pets Alive, Doctors Without Borders, Smile Train, Covenant House, Dell Children’s Hospital, Oceana Belize, NDSS, Serve Taylor After School, River Trail Nature Center, OLPH, Fire Museum of Greater Chicago, and Shepherds Heart. His generosity reflected his belief in supporting people, education, the arts, and compassionate care.

John was a loyal friend—one who kept connections across decades—yet he also had the rare gift of making strangers feel like old companions. With a quick wit, a storyteller’s heart, and countless tales from “the old days,” he filled every room with warmth and humor. Those who knew him cherished his company, and those who didn’t often wished they had.

He leaves behind a legacy of character, compassion, curiosity, service, and connection—one that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to share in his remarkable life.
