I met Joel through beautiful Kim at a party at my home in Long Beach many years ago. The man was charming, very friendly and funny. He only got better over the years

I remember going out to dinner w/Kim and Joel one night, after a Shelter Hope daytime event. I mentioned to Joel that I was nervous about getting ready to go on tour w/my band and he was calming me with his positive words of wisdom and then of course I prompted him to tell me stories about his career in music. It was just one of those lovely nights. You are missed Joel, not only today, on your birthday, but everyday. You will always be in my my heart. XO, Demetra

Joel and I spent a day with Wolfgang Puck and baked pizzas for customers and our families at the old Spago on Sunset. Not only was it a memorable day but it encouraged me to launch Toscana and Kathie’s and my mini restaurant empire. Thank you XO Joel

I met Kim back in 2009 and started working with her, rescuing dogs. Shelter Hope was not open yet. I remember coming over to Kim and Joel's home for the first time, after a long day of picking up dogs and cats. Joel met me and we clicked immediately! I told him I was a musician in a band and he started telling me all the cool stories of his work in Hollywood, and how he picked songs for movies. Since he was ill and could no longer could out and about, we continued emailing each other, checking in. I send him an email from Brazil, where we opened the show for The Foo Fighters every night. He emailed me the very next day and told me how proud of me he was and that he loved the pictures from the show. Joel, Kirk and I loved and respected you and loved hearing and looking at your pictures, doing what you loved so much, in our big vast ocean. You will always be loved and remembered by us. We love Kim and will be there for her as much as she needs. And of course, I must mention your huge love for animals and loved ALL your dogs! I'd like to think you are hanging with Simba Sue, Blue, Spooky and Stoli. Perhaps they are hanging out with our dogs :)

Kim,
Silva and I were deeply saddened to learn of Joel’s passing. Joel was a truly kind and generous man and never made much of his well deserved success as someone responsible for America’s sound track for the decades that shaped so many of us. We are very sorry for your loss.

I have known Joel for more than 25 years, and I will always remember the profound impact he had on my life and career. He gave me my very first opportunity to license my songs for one of his projects. At that time, I had just launched my company, Latin Music Specialists, and placed an ad in The Hollywood Reporter to let Hollywood know about my Latin music catalog. To my surprise, Joel himself came to my studio, script in hand for a film he was working on.
I couldn’t believe that such a renowned and respected music supervisor was standing in front of me. That meeting changed my life. Joel believed in me and what I was building, and through the years he gave me many opportunities, encouragement, and unwavering support.
Beyond work, I treasure the relaxed conversations we shared over meals. It was during those moments that I discovered Joel’s passion for diving and photography. Listening to him describe his adventures in some of the most beautiful islands and oceans of the world completely fascinated me. His stories revealed the depth of a man who lived an adventurous, inspiring, and extraordinary life.
Thank you, Joel, from the bottom of my heart—for your faith in me, your generosity, inspiration and your friendship. Your absence will be deeply felt, and your memory will live on with great admiration and gratitude.

I interviewed with Joel as an assistant many years ago when he was leaving Warner Bros. to start a new company with Taylor Hackford and Stewart Benjamin. Even though I told him I had never worked in the film/music industry, he hired me. We continued to work together for the next 30 years on many film projects. There wasn't any music situation Joel couldn't resolve, which is why he was so good at what he did. Throughout the years he worked with many wonderful people who also became good friends. Joel was a great one for storytelling. I will miss him very much.

Joel was a very special man to use - not just through work but because of the human he was. I’ll miss his stories about NYC and disco times and so much more … I cherish all the gingerbread houses - so much love to Kim - Leslie & Bob Zemeckis

This is for Kim and all the people at Shelter Hope who make the work possible. We had no idea this had just happened when we adopted our pup at Shelter Hope this week. You are all amazing and we are pleased to make this donation to honor this huge loss to Kim and the shop. God Bless you all for the amazing work you do.

I had the privilege of being one of Joel’s nurses. He was always such a gentleman and always went out of his way to know something about all of the nurses who cared for him and always had a smile and a laugh. I enjoyed hearing about his underwater adventures and he shared one of my all time favorite photos taken under water during his exploration. He will be missed by many.

For all of you that have been reaching out to me and I have not returned your messages just know that I appreciate the love. I also want you to know that "I am sorry for your loss". Joel was my rock, my partner in everything and I am following his lead right now and trying to take care of myself. Joel left this earth on his terms, his way, and left a lot of us grieving but much better off for knowing him.
