Joel was among the most influential scientists I have ever worked with. I learned so very much from him. Joel was a rock of a person, but now he is gone way too soon - a terrible loss for us, for science, and for his family.  Joel's energy, enthusiasm, love of life, and intellect live on in uncounted ways.

My thoughts are with your family during this sad and difficult time. Joel was a great mentor with high expectations and a wealth of knowledge to share; I am a better scientist because of my time in his lab.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I've enjoyed my collaborations with Joel for more than a decade. He was a great colleague: knowledgeable, thoughtful and most importantly, fun to work with. I'll miss him as a wonderful collaborator and a great friend.
Dear Pedersen family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Joel was my PhD advisor and a wonderful man. I remember how talks in his office about science inevitably turned to discussions about kids, music and life, in general. His passion for science and witty personality will stay with me always.

Wishing you peace,

Sam Sibley
