My heartfelt condolences to Joel's family and friends. In the short time that Joel was with our department, it was already clear that he could provide senior leadership to help move our department forward with his enthusiasm, energy, and experience. He will be missed by EHE, JHU, and the broad community of researchers and educators in environmental science and engineering, where he was very highly regarded. I was looking forward to getting to know Joel better as a friend and a colleague, and it is so sad that he could not be with us long.

My deepest condolences to Joel’s family. I am so shocked and so sad to hear about Joel’s passing. I even do not know he had battle with the cancer. At the end of 2021, he even helped with my paper. When I was a visiting scholar in your lab, I learnt a lot from you. You are also gentle to all of us, and always enthusiastic and serious about your research, which will impact me and students in my group. You will be missed forever.

I send light and love to Joel's family, friends, and science collaborators. I collaborated with Joel as a post-doc at UW-Madison, and am so grateful for his mentorship, especially when it came to writing. He had such an impact on so many, and his contributions to the field will be continued through the work of so many.

I was very saddened to hear about Joel's passing, especially not knowing he'd been battling cancer. He was a bright light indeed, and the environmental science field will feel his loss. Joel was a thoughtful, determined, and whip-smart researcher who pushed his students to be their very best. My deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.

I'm sending my condolences to your family. I knew Joel first through my nanomaterial work, and then as a colleague at UW-Madison. He served on my students PhD committees, and they appreciated his expertise. He will certainly be missed.

Carleen, Kyle, Trent, and Corey:
On behalf of the UW Environmental Chemistry and Technology Program, we send your family comfort and prayers during this difficult time. Joel was a gifted scientist and a key member of our graduate program faculty. So many students were deeply influenced by his teaching, mentorship and leadership in environmental research. Certainly, his legacy in our field will continue to grow through the many people he helped through the years here in Madison and beyond. It is truly an honor to have had him as a colleague.
Peace to your family,
Jim Hurley

My deepest sympathies to Joel's family, friends, and colleagues. I knew Joel far too briefly, but long enough to be assured that his legacy will live on in the countless people whose lives he left a positive impact upon.
Shortly after starting with Joel as a postdoc, we carpooled to a small meeting together. We bonded over our mutual experience with the Boy Scouts and trips to the Philmont Scout Ranch. This conversation left me with the impression of a man deeply committed to his family, leadership, and a genuine passion for preservation of the natural world. Though these are tough times without him, I hope that all of his loved ones can take comfort that the world is a far better place because we had Joel in it.

A bright light has gone out in the world. When I was at ETH finishing my Masters, Joel took a chance on hosting an awkward 20 something in his lab. His kindness, curiosity, and raw brilliance inspired me to pursue a PhD and a career in science. He was a friend and a mentor, and I will miss him.

My deepest sympathy to all who knew Joel, especially his beautiful family. I was fortunate to have Joel as a mentor throughout my academic training: as a student, his teaching assistant, and then as a postdoctoral researcher. Joel’s thoughtfulness and curiosity were inspiring. Joel’s pursuit of truth and knowledge made him a torchbearer of academic rigor. I imagine all of us who were fortunate to train with Joel will carry this with us.
Wishing you peace and healing,
Sam Thomas
