Joan's obituary
On August 26, 2025, our beloved Joan Margaret Palliser passed away surrounded by family. Born in Germany in 1936 when her parents were visiting her ailing Oma, she grew up in Edmonton Alberta, and met her husband William (Bill) on a blind date because she loved to dance. She was trained as a Radiological (xray) Technician in 1957, working at Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton. Joan and Bill married in Alberta in 1958 and moved to BC with their first born daughter where Bill worked as a railroader and eventually engineer. They had two more children, and she was active in attending her kids swimming and skating lessons, dance, band, hockey, lacrosse, baseball, field hockey practices and games and swim meets. She ensured her children were introduced to church and Messengers, and was Tawny Owl for the Brownie pack supporting participation in cub scouts, Brownies, Girl Guides and Air Cadets. She became involved with the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority group in later years and volunteered collecting donations at channel 8 wrestling matches for the CKNW little boys and girls orphan fund and working the concession at Deer Lake Shadbolt Centre. She lived with Multiple Sclerosis for most of her adult life but was able to enjoy gardening and travelling the world with Bill while her illness and disability was in the early to mid stages. She always expressed gratitude that Bill was able to provide such wonderful travel experiences for her.
The family wishes to thank all of her care providers over the years, for their diligent care of Joan. She is survived by her husband William, sister Helen, daughter Christine (Frank), son Howard (Michelle), daughter CaraLynn (James), and grandchildren Eva, Rachel, Jacob, Sarah, and Amber, Great granddaughter Eleanor, and many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Eva and Hans Bolte, Aunty Betty and Helen, sister Gerda, Sister-in-laws Joy and Marie and Brother-in-laws Ben, Gordon, Lionel and Ken. She is remembered for her love of family, friends, and nature, care for her sorority sisters, and personal devotion to the Christian faith. She actively practiced gratitude, demonstrating incredible inner strength, kindness and genuine care for others, a strong ethical and moral compass, and sense of humour. Truly loved and missed by all.
A Celebration of Life will be held in her memory at 2:00 Pm on Saturday November 22, 2025 at the Jubilee United Church (formerly known as South Burnaby United Church) at 7591 Gray Ave., Burnaby BC.
