Cari, I’m so sad to hear about the passing of Jeff. Samantha is friends with your neighbors’ daughter and I mentioned you - and she shared that he had passed. My heart and prayers go out to you. We remember him very fondly - playing with our toddlers during soccer games, our dinners out with you, The Kitchen, and Jeff opening his office after dinner to perform a medical procedure on Mike. He was truly one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met. I’m deeply sorry for your loss.

Jeff & Cari were the first to welcome Sam & I into the community back when Sam joined the practice in 1998. They both made us feel welcome, and it was the start of a long, fun friendship. Jeff and his family have been in our prayers ever since he was first diagnosed. Sam will miss their Wednesday lunches, and we will both miss Jeff’s quiet but witty sense of humor. He was a good friend, a caring doctor and a man who loved his family more than anything. Our hearts go out to Cari, Aaron and Noah and we’ll always be grateful for the memories we have of our friend.

Yesterday, while at the El Dorado Hills Safeway, I thought of Jeff. Probably because the last few times I saw him -- said hi to him -- was in that store after he had worked out at SNAP. This was after he had sold his practice, after receiving his diagnosis. I looked him up online, found this site, and started to cry.
Dr. Shulkin was "Dr. Shulkin" when I went into his office; Jeff was "Jeff" when I saw him at SNAP or Safeway. Dr. Shulkin had a no-nonsense approach in the office. He reminded me of the highly-intelligent physician researchers that I once worked with at the UC Davis Medical Center. All business but if you made a joke, or if you brought up a topic other than the purpose of your medical visit, Dr. Shulkin would give you one of those smiles and take the time to engage in a friendly, non-work related conversation.
Jeff would joke around a lot at SNAP. Super friendly. It was fun to see the outside-the-office side of him at SNAP.
In 2012 my wife kept commenting on swelling that appeared every so often around my right ankle. I wasn't too concerned because I was running a lot then, had assumed that I had slighly injured my ankle, and the swelling was due to not letting it properly heal. Out the door one day for an appointment my wife made me promise to bring it to Dr. Shulkin's attention. The day of the visit my ankle wasn't swollen, but Dr. Shulkin, based on my descriptions, had me immediately go across the street to have an ultrasound procedure conducted on my leg. I was diagnosed with a blood clot -- DVT.
During a subsequent visit with Dr. Shulkin, he made the comment along the lines of, "Good thing I am so conservative" (he didn't use the word "conservative," a different word that begins with "A***"). Yes, it was a good thing that he was, his diagnosis, and his prescriptions for anticoagulants, have likely prevented me from suffering a serious health outcome -- possibly saved my life.
I really liked Dr. Shulkin (Jeff) a lot. He was a great physician and a great guy.

I’m so sorry to hear of Jeff’s passing. I never knew Jeff as a doctor but as a neighbor who walked everyday rain or shine. Jeff befriended my anxious dog Otis and every day we would work on greeting Jeff with a quiet hello. We will miss seeing you. My condolences to the family.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of an amazing physician. Not only did I work with him at MHF, but he saved my mother’s life by diagnosing her condition early. We were told many times by oncologists how lucky she was that he was able to diagnose her so quickly. Dr. Shulkin will never be forgotten. We are grateful for him every day. I am sending loving thoughts and prayers to his family.

Although I only worked for and with him for a year, but had known him for 7 years working at MHF, I was just so amazed what a wonderful human being, boss, colleague he was once you get to know him. He will be missed and thank you for being so wonderful!

I’m going to miss you, Jeff. 😓💔
From kindergarten, through high school, to becoming friends again as adults. You were my friend, my doctor, my Thai food buddy and my greatest support when I was having scary health issues.
My heart and prayers go out to your family and all your loved ones.
I remember last year, at lunch, talking about life after death. I’ll see you again, one day……❤️

My condolences to Cari, Noah, and Aaron for the passing of their beloved husband and father. Jeff’s journey to beat his cancer and live well for five more years is truly inspiring. Cari, I’m so appreciative of you sharing your journey together as we worked to help other patients with cancer in our stop tobacco project at UCD. May you find comfort in remembering how well he lived and also how many patients he helped heal in his own life’s work. Big hugs to you Cari!

My friend Jeff Shulkin walked the walk like no other. His commitment to his family and his profession were unmatched. He gave so much back to his patients . As his long time neighbor I heard him up and leaving his house at all hours of the night , year in and year out, to visit his patients in the hospital. Jeff’s selfless nature made me have so much admiration for him . His family meant everything to him . They were always his priority. Jeff walked the walk. I miss and will always love you Dr. J

We are so sad to hear of Jeff’s passing. Our memories are from the early days of Jeff and Cari dating and getting married. We all worked together at UCDMC. One of my favorite memories is when we brought dinner to their not finished home in El Dorado Hills and toasted with champagne while perched on boxes of flooring. He was a funny, smart guy with a big heart. Our condolences to Cari, Noah and Aaron.

Jeff was a good doc but even a better person. Smart, always with a smile and a chuckle. Gosh he was fun. He will be missed.

Jeff was a fun, caring, bright light in this world. Such a loss, way too early. I loved the time we spent at Temple Kol Shalom, and appreciated his deep love for his family, generous leadership and musical talent, his joy in learning and his patience in teaching. I remember him from temple youth group when we were teens and how thoughtful and responsible he was from such a young age. An inspiring life well lived!
