I just heard of the passing of Dr. Hanway. I had the privilege of working with him at CHILDRENS National Medical Center during my 2 travel nurse assignments there, first in 2008 & again in 2011. Not only was Dr. Hanway a fine surgeon but more importantly he was a kind, compassionate person. He will be missed but all who knew him.
I am a children's national attending in another department and was returning on the same flight as a number of orthopedic surgeons who had just attended the annual American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons meeting March 6-10 in New Orleans. The surgeons in front of me were all talking about Dr. Hanway and the tragic loss of such a wonderful man. The people who missed him included a senior Orthopedist from Boston Children's Hospital. I just wanted the family to know how he touched so many people's lives and was greatly respected by his national colleagues.

Libby, Jack, Yvonne, and Hanway Siblings: I'm sorry to hear of this news. I do have one consistent memory to share about Jeff. His interpersonal skills were exceptional. No matter the day or circumstance, Jeff showed the love of Jesus through his actions, family commitments, and relationship with friends. Our family will be praying for you. Sincerely, Eric & Kim Forseth.
Such a tremendous loss. It's been years since I worked with him but will always remember his kind heart, compassion, and love for his family. And his laugh. :) He was an excellent and dedicated doctor and a genuinely good man. Deepest condolences to his family.
almost 9 years of being Dr Hanway's nurse in the OR! Always kidding me about my shoes and : "Hey Alisa! are you my nurse today? I have an add on hip scope case!" Thank you so much Dr Jeff for all these good times and taking such good care of our "Kids"
Libby and kids, Jeff’s parents and siblings, my heart aches for you. This loss is cruel and all too soon. There are no words for this but let me try. I will remember Jeff as an exceptionally kind, generous, smart, handsome and funny man who absolutely adored his wife and children and the life they had built together. I have seen him almost fall off the chair seeing his lovely wife of 20+ years coming down the stairs all dressed up for a party. And you his children, you meant everything to him and he was so very proud of you. A humble man, his presence made the world a better place for us all. There was the time he earned stripes as a Top Doc in the DC area and was embarrassed about all that attention. The testimonials from parents of kids he operated on show his dedication, exceptional skills and kindness to each child, each family he encountered at work. As a frequent house guest over the years I will fondly remember his generosity, fun and deep conversations over cheese and a glass of wine. The way he and Libby generously opened their home to so many, gave so much. The lovely dinners we all shared. And the early morning lattes he and I shared recently -- me jetlagged and him off to work to help yet another child to a fixed back, hip or foot. I wish I had told him then how fond I was of him and so impressed with the many ways he always devoted himself to being a great father, husband, doctor and friend. I hope that Jeff will find lots of time to go for beautiful bike rides in the Italy-part of Heaven. And that you Libby, Sasha, Tori, Christian and Sophia will somehow over time find a way to live without him. And that you will feel his presence and love every day, and at times of wedding and graduation celebrations to come.

So sorry for your loss. I worked with Dr. Hanway at Fairfax Hospital in the OR at ASC. He was a wonderful person and great surgeon. He took care of my daughter Elaine when she tore her ACL. God Bless you and your children.
I was blessed to work with Jeff for the past 12 years. Not only was he a fantastic doctor and colleague, but he was also a cherished friend. His generosity of spirit was evident everyday in his willingness to pitch in, provide guidance or lend a sympathetic ear. His smile and quick laugh brightened the room and were contagious in a way that made meetings and conferences fun. His absence will leave a void in the department that will never truly be filled. May God watch over his soul and the lives of Libby, Sasha, Tori, Christian and Sophia.
Although I didn't get to see Jeff as much as in the "old days", when he did come yo Fairfax Hospital, Jeff always managed to find me for a "nostalgic" chat. His wonderful reputation speaks for itself. May your memories of him be a source of comfort in the difficult days ahead.
Condolences to your family, may his memory be a blessing to you. I worked in the ER at Fairfax when he started, and he was such a joy to work with: kind to the kids, families and his colleagues as well as being meticulously professional and caring. He was a consummate physician and surgeon, and I am sorry to hear news of his passing.
We are so sorry for your loss. We are praying for you and your family and may God bless you all and help you get through these hard times. Love, Paul and Patricia
Jeff was part of a team of surgeons I took to Haiti immediately after the massive earthquake in 2010. We spent a very intense week together. I not only got to see Jeff in action but also saw how respected he was among other orthopedic surgeons from around the country. Jeff is the kind of person you just wanted to be around. My prayer is that God will comfort his wife Libby and the family.

His work family will miss him! He always shared his smile. He was wonderful to the staff and to his patients. We are privileged to have know and worked with him.
I had the privilege of being one of Jeff's college classmates and a "brother" in the NNU Covenant (mentoring) Group. Jeff was distinguished by his unique personhood, his pristine values and aspirations and his giftedness both on the athletic field and in the classroom. As a follower of Jesus, he lived for a higher purpose that was expressed in his exceptional life, the beautiful family he cherished and the extravagant love he expressed to others. This continued his entire life. Jeff was faithful to the end. His life counted. Kathie and I honor him. We express our deep condolences to Libby and the kids. We will never forget the amazing morning we had with - just four months ago - over breakfast in your home. Our heartfelt prayers are with you!
All who knew Jeff have been blessed. What a wonderful role model and inspiration he always has been. May God bless you and provide for you in the days ahead while you wait to be united once more. Love and prayers, Vonnie McDaniel
