Our family shares our deepest condolences with the entire Martel clan. Uncle Jason was an amazing person who could always light up the room with his infectious laugh, big smile, or booming voice. Although he left us far too soon, he leaves behind a legacy of service and family, and has touched so many people's lives. Jason was always so much fun to be around. Even in difficult situations, he could find a way to connect with people and be a calming force. He had a way of making people feel welcomed and part of the family. We saw this at every family event he attended; whether it was sipping whiskey in OBX, North Carolina, or taking time to talk with our oldest son and connect on his level.
Some of our fondest memories include playing a game of pickup basketball (with the appropriate amount of trash talking for a man his age), waves and sand, the best driving directions for out of towners, and being a wonderful host. Some of the lessons he taught us were service to country, spending time with family, and never taking yourself too seriously.
We'll always remember our time with Uncle Jason fondly -- all the best to the family in this difficult time.
We love you all!

I served with Jason on USS Helena(1997ish?) and he was always such a positive spirit. I can’t imagine the impact he had on his fellow sailors as he moved through his career. His family should be so proud of his accomplishments in his short life…Gone too soon my Brother.

As I was driving through Austin last night, I thought of Jason, the profound loss to his family, just the suddenness of it all. Then the song "Sail on Sailor" by The Beach Boys came on the radio. I imagined him standing on the deck of his submarine, about to descend into some ocean (classified, of course). Sail on, my friend.

Jason was always a class act. We attended high school together and also ran on the track team. He always carried a strong and kind heart under his “cool kid” exterior. So terribly saddened to hear of his passing

When my husband served with Jason we had the privilege of getting to meet the family as well. As most military families know especially submariners families. When there sailor goes to sea, it is extremely important to have all documents that could be important including a Power of Attorney in order “just in case”. Well my family had something come up and I was not prepared and I needed help getting a Power of Attorney while the boat was not reachable. Jason went above and beyond to make sure my husband was able to get that document to me in such a fast and painless way. I still to this day don’t know how Jason was able to make that happen but he did and am forever grateful he made that happen. He has been a good friend to my husband and we are so grateful to have known him. We wish the family our sincere condolences.

Jason was leading Yeoman on Helena in 2009. He was a great leader, submariner, and a true Shipmate. He was my trusted advisor and a good friend. He made a huge impact on so many lives. I am so sorry for your loss.

Jason was a good man. I got to watch from afar him and family grow together over the years. I’m grateful all my kids got to meet him and that we got a chance to connect more recently than we normally would have seeing that we’ve always lived on opposite sides of the country. Nik and kids, I love you all so very much and my heart is with you. Losing Jason is a tremendous loss, my deepest and most sincere condolences to you all.

I offer my my most sincere condolences to Nikole and the children. It was my great honor to serve with you both, Nikole and Jason, while you were assigned at the U.S. Naval Academy when I was Commandant of Midshipmen. Jason was an extraordinary role model and exemplar for the the young Midshipmen, all of whom, in 2001 and later in 2003, were headed to Iraq or Afghanistan. It's important to know, as family and friends grapple with the enormity of this tragic loss, that Midshipmen and officers from that era at the U.S. Naval Academy were made better, more effective, and more deserving leaders because Jason walked among us. Nikole ... God bless you and the children. Jason ... Brother! ... rest in peace.
