An incredible and beautiful being, whose multi-faceted essence shines so exactly in all these precious shots. I recall my mom telling me fond stories of her Jashoda mami being one of the pivots in her life, a guru and a life coach before such a term was even coined, and a huge support system in all ways when she first reached the US. When my mom would have a question, my dad would jokingly say, ask your advisor (her Jashoda Mami), with her mami lovingly calling my mom her fourth daughter. My mom would always say how her Gordhan mama married the perfect woman for him and to the benefit of the entire family. As this photo portrays, the pair of my mom and her mami were often seen together and pretty much a package deal.
She was remarkably creative (I was fortunate enough to fashion one of her riveting designs on my first birthday), one of the greats on anything cooking/baking with an eye and palate for hearty, tasty, and flavorful food, compassionate, considerate, thoughtful, and the first one by your side in a time of need. She displayed devotion in all things and had a knack for cultivating relationships and bringing people together, creating just such an atmosphere, all the while with cascading warmth; a brilliant star, one of a kind and magnificent, but she’d never have you know it. Her resilience had tremendous reach, and in her approach, lay inspiration. She was “the little engine that could”, toughing through life’s hardships with an ironclad spirit.
Often, during a time like this, you tend to think of only the positive interactions and characteristics with/of the individual, but reflecting back, I can bring to mind no negative encounter with her in all my time as no matter what type of day she was having, she always emitted her sunshiny rays so brightly. I can still see her heartwarming and comforting smile. Her beams have genuinely touched all that were privileged to know her, and her impact so felt.
As was her nature, she’s generously gifted us with the grandest tokens of remembrance, Rita, Sheila, and Trupti (my masis), a testament to her spirit and all that she embodied. Blessed that she graced my life and that I’m able to call her one of my own. Although I’ve used so many, there aren’t ample words to do Jashoda ba justice, just with the echoed sentiment that her built legacy lives on with countless memorable moments and stories to store as keepsake in our hearts, she will truly be Forever Loved, the tough cookie that she was.
