Jashodaben's obituary
Jashodaben G. Patel was born in Kampala, Uganda on November 1, 1946. She passed away at the age of 76 on February 21, 2023, in Colonia, New Jersey.
She was the eldest daughter of Dahyabhai and Kamlaben Patel. She spoke of her life in Uganda fondly (with her four brothers and three sisters) and some of her mischievous activities like skipping school.
She married Gordhanbhai C. Patel on March 14, 1965, in India. She moved to Hoboken, New Jersey more than 55+ years ago to be with her husband who arrived a few years earlier. It was the first time she was on an airplane traveling by herself through Europe and arriving in New York to see snowfall for the first time. She went on to have three daughters, Rita Patel, Sheila Patel, Trupti Patel Doshi; two son-in-laws, Alan Haras and Adarsh Doshi; and two grandsons Talin and Niv Doshi. She moved with her family to Colonia, New Jersey in 1981 and lived there until her passing.
Jashodaben experienced many challenges and suffering in her life, especially through her liver transplant and the effects of rheumatoid arthritis. However, she found joy and beauty in each moment, and delighted in being with other people. She was creative and thoughtful - especially with cooking, sewing home goods and clothing, and gardening. Jashodaben had a gift for "making things work."
She did not think of herself as courageous but she is remembered by all who knew her for her immense strength, grace, humility and great kindness. She will be deeply missed.
