I was fortunate enough to have spent Saturday night with Jackie, days before she passed. It was a laid-back hang-out of just a few people at our friend Mariza’s place. Jackie was the last to arrive; she walked through the door with some drinks in hand and a smile on her face. I noticed how golden she was —her skin was always a shade of warm.

We all sat around in the living area; watching a movie —mostly talking over it as our attention spans wavered. Jackie was talking facts about shrimp as she sat on a neon green child size chair. She was always so comical without even trying.

We played music off the t.v, danced, drank some sparkling champagne, and played Heads Up. Jackie’s one-liners had us all belly laughing throughout the night.

In between songs and games we chatted about the future. Jackie was excited and nervous about her new position at Seaview and being front of the house. I told her that despite some minor drinks spills, she would do great.

She later told me one of her mantras was to “work somewhere you are appreciated.” I hope she knows how appreciated —and loved, she truly was.

At the end of the night we all said our goodbyes. I hugged Jackie next to the kitchen island, rubbing her back as we said “bye, goodnight.” She was smiling, despite us all being tired and it being late.

That night is now a fond memory that I’ll keep tucked away in my head, and in my heart. What a joy it was to work with Jackie, and to call her a friend. She was known by many, and loved by all. Her love for culinary, for the ocean, and for her family and friends was unmatched.

I hope she’s dancing among the stars and swimming in the sea. May her family be wrapped in comfort and peace. May all those who knew Jackie be filled with joy of her memory —for she was a joyous young woman.

xx, Kasheda

First time Jackie took me diving. We had so much fun. We saw so many sea turtles and we were so excited 💙
Thank you Jackie, for always inspiring us to see how beautiful our world is, and how to always be kind. Your smile will be with us always.

My birthday, Jackie made me sit for what felt like hours (probably more like 30 minute) and let her put a full face of makeup on me. I fought her the whole time. She tried to take my photo but I refused to pose pretty without her in the photo. She makes me feel like a queen anytime we were together.

Dear Jackie,

You weren’t just one of my co-workers. You weren’t just the lunch lady that served me food at work. You were one of my best friends.

I don’t get close to many people, but with you, you made it easy. I could always be myself with you & can count on you to make me cry-laugh every single time. You were always late to everything, but we always waited for you anyway bc let’s face it you are so worth the wait.

I can still hear your one-of-a-kind scream-laugh anytime I think of you. The life of the party, the light in any darkness. Always smiling, always. If there’s anything you ever taught me it’s to always see the stoke in everything.

I’ll miss our dance parties at work. I’ll miss doing your long never-ending lashes. I’ll miss laughing at you spill drinks on the guests at Hyatt.

I love you, Jacqueline. See you on the other side.

Love,
Melvin
