A year ago tonight, on a cold night like tonight, our beloved Janet slipped quietly away. She is with us always, never far away.

Thank you all for your love and condolences today and over the past year. We will miss her forever.

Today is a day to remember Janet and all that she was to so many. I'm grateful for this page that Kara has set up, as it was a comfort to again read everyone's comments and memories. I know how positive of an impact to my life that Janet has made, and it's been lovely to read the memories from others to get a glimpse of impact she has made. It's been one year now, but she's missed so very much. She was one of a kind and I'm a better person for having her in my life, and teaching so many lessons on life. Love and miss you so much Janet xoxo

Janet was always available to travel locally. Because I was from out of the area - I hail from the Washington, DC area to be specific, I always invited Janet to travel with me.
One memorable occasion in fall, 2014, I had to travel to an emergency veterinarian clinic in North Deerfield, Massachusetts. My dog had a problem with his eyes and the nearest veterinarian-opthamologist was at this clinic. I asked Janet to accompany me......We arrived in the morning for my dog's appointment and he required eye surgery which was scheduled that day...Surgery and recovery took longer than planned and Janet and I killed time in Greenfield, Mass....Janet not only spent the day with me in the Greenfield area - we had to drive back to Keene after dark - but Janet treated me to lunch at a restaurant...After we returned to Keene, I remember Janet's helping me unload the sedated dog and crate....The dog and I wouldn't have made it through this major ordeal without Janet backing us both up....Janet's friendship was so unconditional - all my memories of events/adventures we shared in the short time I knew her are treasures.
I was absolutely amazed when Kara told me her Mom Janet celebrated her XX - just to say not a teenage - Birthday going to skydive !!! It showed Janet is truly adventurous, courageous and always young at heart , able to show us she lives a life true to Hellen Keller’s famous quote : “ Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all .”
I hope we can all learn this wisdom from Janet ! I only met Janet briefly, but her inner energy and charisma around her was very transparent and noticeable.

Janet brightened my days in Keene - her welcome through St. James was instrumental in launching our friendship and countless treasured memories. Accompanying me on more than a few regional road trips, Janet had endless wisdom, humor, charity and style that always added flamboyance to whatever adventure we were engaged in. Deepest condolences.
Such a lovely woman. Inspirational, daring and always looking forward to the next adventure. Will always remember her smile, “track walking”, skydiving, friendship with mom and love of chocolate! It was a gift to have known her. My sincere sympathies to all of you. 💜

This is going to be one of those things I will get sad about in my life when I think about it. I am so sorry for your loss and for the loss to this universe. Oh my gosh this is so sad... She was such a special human being. She literally got me hooked onto education... I remember sitting in her math class in Russia confused as hell and I thought I was stupid but she helped bring my grades up and taught me something amazing about education and life, that just because you can't figure out the solution easily like everyone else doesn't mean that you are stupid, you just have to break down the problem in a different way that makes sense to you to come to the solution. When you looked at her, she appeared soooo serious but then she would out of nowhere say something so hilarious and you would be left confused whether you are allowed to laugh or not because her face would be so serious but what she would be saying would be so hilarious so you would wonder if this was a 'trick question'. I will always remember that night when every teacher had to choose a senior to talk about and she read out a poem "if she were my daughter" and I remember thinking "wow whomever impressed Mrs Horton this much must be an amazing human being" and then she called out my name ... I was floored and humbled that she believed in my that much. I will forever hold her wisdom, refreshingly strange humour in my heart and I hope your family knows that she meant a lot to people around the world because she had this amazing way of making sure that you always knew that you mattered. Oh my gosh I just got a memory of when at Prom night in Russia, I came out of the bathroom and she pulled me aside and said "Cute, I know you like to make an entrance but please do it another way" ... At first I thought she was being cheeky but then I realised ny dress was accidentally tucked into my underwear 🙄😂 You mean a lot to a lot of people, not many people can say that. I have always wanted to send you a thank you letter but never knew how to get in contact with you after we graduated. You will be forever missed.
Our sincere condolences to the family. Colleen and I knew Janet while working in Moscow. She was a classy and witty woman. Together with Su Weekes and Nancy Marmont we spent many a night in Moscow with Janet attending ballet, opera and symphonies - and sharing a bottle of bubbly at intermission.
Dear Kara,
Please, use this message if you wish.
My first memory of your Mum is travelling with our students to Sochi in Russia and sharing the hotel room with her. By then I was back in Moscow for 10 years and knew quite a bit about the “fabric” of the Anglo-American School. I believe it was Janet’s first year in Moscow and she was quite cautious sharing a room with the strange Russian but we hit it of quite soon and became good friends.
At the suggestion of the Principal, I involved Janet in the organization of the Prom and we worked successfully on many together. You probably heard about one episode of buying tulips in the Russian market. I said: “Janet, you live near the market, why would not you buy some tulips for the Prom? And off she went asking the woman seller:” How much is one tulip?” I should mention here that none of them knew each other’s language. “Fifty rubles was the answer”. Here Janet wanted to get a discount.” And what if I buy”a 100 tulips?” Then the woman showed Janet her calculator with 50 x 100! That was funny considering Janet was a mathematician. But here Janet’s wicked sense of humor switched on! Nice memories…
Janet was a lovely woman and a good friend. We shared love for fasion and beauty. Once I got a beautiful pendant and no choker. Janet at that time was going to Dubai and offered to bring me one and she did, just exactly as I envisaged it. I still have it.
Janet also was a good writer. At the end of the year we had to write a narrative about our favorite graduate. Janet’s was a masterpiece.
Since I retired, we met twice: once in Portsmouth and second time Janet and Suzanne came to us in London.
It is sad that she left us so early. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
I’m so sorry for your loss, Kara. You, Lara, and the rest of your family are in our thoughts. Much love to you all.
Such a wonderfully genuine person, the lightning wit & sense of music will be well remembered...
Rest peacefully Janet! I enjoyed meeting and working with you in Moscow. Heaven has gained another angel.
My condolences to friends and family
Love and light
