James's obituary

James “Son” Henderson was born August 15, 1950 to Thomas Henderson and Augustina Lavinier in Grand Bay, Dominica. He was the eldest child of his mother’s children and became the man of the house almost immediately. James was a loving son and was undeniably the light of his mother’s eyes.

Like most children who would grow into their own, James grew very fond of automobiles and how they worked. Upon completing his general studies in Dominica, James ventured to St. Thomas, USVI where there were more employment opportunities. By going to St. Thomas, he figured he would have a better chance at cultivating his “hobby” into a lucrative skill. James spent some time working as an apprentice at a body shop where he mastered repairing and painting vehicles. He prided himself on learning the job so well that his boss began extending more responsibilities his way. This would prove to be a move in the right direction because he was now exposed to more than just auto body work.

During his time on St. Thomas, James met his wife and they made their way to New York where they would start their family. They spent some time in Brooklyn and Jamaica, Queens before settling in Far Rockaway, NY.

James worked odd jobs, most notably for Central Petroleum, an oil company in the Bronx. There, he repaired and painted the oil delivery trucks. James completed mechanic school for his certification and embarked on a journey to entrepreneurship. He partnered with some friends and purchased an established mechanic shop at 873 Liberty Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. The shop would be called TES Auto and would soon become a well-known location for honest auto repair and sales service as well as generous fellowship among old and new friends. James worked alongside is longtime business partner and friend, Stan Charles.

Anyone who knew James Henderson knew he was an avid storyteller. He loved recounting stories of back home. He told long tales of going out on the boats with master diver fishermen to hunting trips with his grandfather. No matter the story, James was always animated and met conflict with victory every time. James was also a serious domino player. On any given Saturday night if you pass by the shop, you might find a large bottle of Carlo Rossi red wine, two square tables, and a few good friends enjoying a night of intense dominos.

There are many ways to describe James Henderson. He was caring, hard-working, funny, and extremely generous. James always took care of those he held close to him. There are many people James has helped along the way, whether by providing a place to stay, a job, a vehicle, or a plate of food. If he had it to give, he gave it. James was a hard-working man who worked until his last days. He loved being in the shop around his people.

James Henderson has greatly influenced those who knew him to be better people and to always work hard. His absence leaves a great void and we pray that he rests in peace….until we meet again.
