James Walter Rome was born October twenty-six, nineteen hundred forty-seven, in Chowan County, Edenton, NC to the late Aaron Sr. and Jessie Mae Newby Rome, who preceded him in death. James was known to many as "Billy" , attended school New York. He later joined the United States Navy. After the Navy Billy returned home where he started commercial fishing alongside his brother Lloyd. He also had his hand in construction work which involved building a lot of bridges and overpasses in Chowan County. 

     After many years in his hometown James relocated to Durham, North Carolina where he dedicated his life as one of Jehovah's Witness in the 90's and serve faithfully until his death on Sunday March 20, 2022. 

     He is survived by his wife Ruby Cofield Rome, four daughters: Daphne Dillard, Doneyell Simmons and Daneyell Gold (Jason) all of Edenton, NC and Bernadelle Cofield of Knightdale, NC and one son Tramine Cofield of Durham, NC. Three brothers John T. Rome and John Skinner of Edenton, NC. Lloyd Rome (Ruth) of Altavista, Va. and Charlie Rome (Dondra) of Columbia, NC. Five sister: Shirley Burnett, Mary Hayes, Joyce Ann Rome, and Sherry Rome all of Edenton and Jeanette Phelp (James) of Columbia, NC. Ten grandchildren and Two great grandchildren and a host of nieces,nephews, cousins and friends. 

     He was preceded in death by one grandchild Jon'Azya Simmons, three brothers Aaron Rome Jr, Lindsey Rome, and Louis Rome and two  sisters Alice Ray Rome and Nancy Rome.
