Mr. James Monroe “Crow” Moxley, age 82 of Soperton passed away on Friday afternoon, September 2, 2022 at his residence.
Born in Treutlen County, he was the only child born to the late Barney James and Eudora Phillips Moxley. He was a lifelong resident of Soperton, graduating from Treutlen County High School, Class of 1958. After high school, he attended ABAC where he earned his Associates of Arts Degree in Agri Business. He returned home and worked at Davis Tractor in Vidalia where he met his future wife, also an only child, Toombs County native, Glenda Register. He later opened a Grocery Store in Tarrytown and in the mid 1970s he and his father opened the Sears Roebuck Store in Soperton until selling in 1978. He worked for the GA Forestry Commission and is remembered as being Smokey the Bear. During these preceding years he was serving in the Army National Guard. In 1979 he reenlisted on active duty, assigned to Fort Stewart, reporting to the armory in Lyons as the NCOIC Training Sergeant for Company C 878 Engineers (Combat Heavy) until retiring in 2000. Upon retiring from active duty he opened Crow Mart in Soperton, which was known as the “go to coffee shop” where all of the town’s problems were solved; or at least talked about.
Crow served two separate terms as a City Councilman for the City of Soperton, was a charter member of the Soperton Jaycees, was a former of the Vidalia V.F.W. and a former member of the Vidalia Moose Lodge.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son in law, Ron Caputi.
Mr. Moxley leaves behind, his children, Grahl Moxley, Vidalia, GA, Carla Caputi, Forsyth, GA, his former wife, Glenda August, Vidalia, GA, a granddaughter, Leslie Culpepper (Mathew), Lake Park, GA and two great granddaughters, McKenzie and Amelia.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Don Paradise officiating.
Mr. Moxley will be laid to rest beside his parents in Boiling Springs Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
His family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be: Danny Powell, Quinn Mullis, Dr. Michael Atkinson Jr., Steve Bath, Jonne Evans and Shannon Hart.
Being recognized as his fellow bench sitters and honorary pallbearers will be: Kennon Peeples, Buddy Byrd, Scrubby Barnhill, Reggie Evans and Jack Lawrence, (deceased).
