Jim's obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James "Jim" Masters on June 22, 2024. Born on December 7, 1945 in Milwaukee, WI Jim was a man of strength, sarcasm, and unparalleled wit. His calm demeanor amidst chaos was a trait that defined him and one he always prided himself on. Jim proudly served as a Milwaukee Police Officer and as a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff. In his later years Jim was a training instructor for Volvo and Honda. He was even a gentleman farmer for a time.
Jim had a deep love for his country, advocating for causes such as support for law enforcement, the military and veterans. As a staunch patriot, he displayed an unwavering dedication to his fellow deputy sheriffs until his last breath. His sense of duty was equaled only by the love he held for his family. He was incredibly proud of his children, Jay and Jennifer Masters, who survive him. He was particulary proud of their service with the US Marine Corps. He was predeceased by his father, James Clair Masters and by his mother Carol Masters.
Known for his sarcasm and wit, Jim was also a master at a host of activities including playing drums, orienteering, baking, and brewing gourmet coffee. He was an avid sports fan, supporting the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers. A connoisseur of various beverages, Jim loved Ethiopian Coffee, Guinness Beer and Bourbon. He even humorously cited drinking Guinness as his favorite way to exercise.
Key highlights of Jim's career was his service as a sergeant with the US Army in Germany and his successful stint at the Firestone Sheriff's Station in South Central Los Angeles. At a time when "the Stone" was one of the busiest, most violent and dangerous policing areas in the country, Jim's unwavering dedication and courage stood out. He was also an outstanding field training officer who helped shape many dedicated deputies from the inexperienced trainee pool.
To those who knew him, James Masters will be remembered as a gruff and patriotic curmudgeon with a big heart that he often tried to hide. His legacy will continue to live through the lives that he touched, and the values he instilled in his children.
In the months leading up to his passing, Jim regained his faith in Jesus Christ. His belief was resolute and provides comfort to know that he is at peace now. Even as we mourn his passing, we celebrate his life and the remarkable man that he was.
