James's obituary

James Nash Henderson was born in Austin, Texas to Fay L. and Sophelia Henderson on August 26, 1942. He was the 5th of 6 children born to this union. All family members preceded James in death, except his youngest sister, Marie. James attended school in the early years of his life in Austin. His family relocated to Oakland California when he was 9 years old. He attended Laney and Merritt Colleges in Oakland CA. Shortly thereafter, James enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the Medical corp during the Vietnam Conflict. James was able to follow his love for animals by doing research on heart worm disease in dogs.

After his honorable discharge, James was employed by Chrysler Corporation and eventually retired from government service in 2004. While employed at Chrysler, James met and married his wife of 42 years, Essie Pharr Johnson. They remained in California until both retired in 2004. Being an easy going person and a devoted husband, James willingly followed Essie’s suggestion to move closer to their children and relatives in the East and Midwest. After researching, the decision was made to relocate to Aiken SC in 2004.

James was the kindest, “gentle giant” (as some called him) this side of heaven. He loved children, animals, and gardening. He would gladly give you the shirt off of his back! He volunteered readily whenever asked or needed. Loving children and animals as he did, James volunteered at Second Baptist School and of course, Aiken SPCA. James always served quietly in the background, never seeking attention. Before relocation to Aiken, James served on the usher board and finance committee at his church in Vallejo CA. He also served on other auxiliaries in the church.

Celebrating James’ transition on June 20, 2019 from an earthly life to a heavenly life are his wife, Essie, children Kimberley Ottley (Derrick Sr.) and Corey Henderson, grandchildren, Derrick Jr., Kaylin, Derrin and Camille, sister, Marie Taliaferro, nieces, nephews, and all other family members.
